In a landmark move toward urban redevelopment and environmental sustainability, the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have finalized an ambitious plan to replace the towering Bhalswa landfill with a state-of-the-art Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT). This project aims to clear the massive “mountains of garbage” that have long plagued North Delhi, transforming the site into a high-tech transportation hub that will serve multiple northern states.
Strategic Shift for Northern State Connectivity
The proposed Bhalswa ISBT is set to become the primary gateway for bus services operating between Delhi and Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Currently, these services are concentrated at the Kashmere Gate ISBT, which faces extreme congestion due to the high volume of daily passengers and vehicular traffic. By shifting operations to Bhalswa, the government expects a significant reduction in the traffic bottleneck at Kashmere Gate and within the city’s central arteries.
Benefits of the Bhalswa Location
One of the most critical advantages of the Bhalswa site is its proximity to the Delhi-Haryana border. Unlike Kashmere Gate, where buses often spend hours navigating city traffic to reach the outskirts, the new terminal will allow buses to exit or enter the national capital swiftly. This strategic positioning will not only save travel time for thousands of daily commuters but also reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions associated with idling in traffic jams.
Bio-Mining: The Technology Behind the Cleanup
The transformation of a 70-acre landfill, where waste reaches heights of over 60 meters, is no small feat. The MCD is employing advanced Bio-Mining technology to clear the legacy waste. This scientific process involves segregating the waste into different components like soil, recyclables, and inert materials, which are then disposed of or repurposed. The target for complete site clearance is set for the end of this year, following high-level coordination meetings between government officials.

Beyond transportation, the removal of the Bhalswa landfill is a massive win for public health.
