‘Victory of People’: Tarique Rahman’s Historic Call for Unity After Bangladesh Landslide Win

Date:

DHAKA – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a massive win in the 13th national parliamentary elections. Led by Tarique Rahman, the party won 209 seats on February 12, 2026. This victory marks a major shift for the country after years of political change. Moreover, it is the first free poll since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

A Victory for the People

Shortly after the results, Tarique Rahman addressed the nation. He called the win a “victory of the people.” Furthermore, he dedicated this success to everyone who fought for democracy. He noted that the triumph belongs to the citizens.Rahman also urged all Bangladeshis to stand together. He emphasized the need to protect democratic rights. Specifically, he warned the public to avoid a return to authoritarian rule. Because of the high voter turnout, Rahman believes the people have regained faith in the system.

Ending Years of Exile

This election follows a historic break in the nation’s politics. Sheikh Hasina, currently in exile in India, did not participate. Consequently, the BNP’s return to power signals a new era.Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka in December 2025 after 17 years abroad. His return was a deeply emotional moment for his supporters. However, the party soon mourned the loss of his mother, Khaleda Zia. Despite this grief, the party remained focused on the election.

The Road to Reform

As Rahman prepares to lead, the nation is looking toward the future. Voters also showed strong support for a new national charter. This charter aims to:

  • Strengthen democratic institutions.
  • Protect the civil liberties of all citizens.
  • Improve overall governance.
