ATM Theft Attempt Foiled: 3 Accused Arrested in Ram Mandi, Punjab

Date:

Attempt to Steal Cash from ATM Fails; CCTV, Shutters Damaged

In a bold yet unsuccessful attempt to steal money from an ATM in Ram Mandi, Punjab, police have arrested three men after extensive investigation of CCTV footage and physical evidence at the scene. The accused damaged the CCTV cameras and the ATM shutters during the late-night attempt but failed to break open the ATM vault and withdraw any cash.

The incident took place between March 1 and March 3, 2026, at an ATM booth belonging to Axis Bank in the Ramsara area. Residents and local police were alerted after suspicious sounds were heard near the ATM outside bank premises. On reaching the site, officers found the CCTV cameras torn and the shutter locks forcibly tampered with. However, because the ATM vault remained intact, the theft was not successful.

Police Investigation and Arrests

After registering a case of attempted theft and damage to public property, the investigation team under SHO Kaur Singh meticulously reviewed hours of CCTV footage from nearby cameras. This led to the identification of three suspects: Ravi Kumar, Ranjit Kumar, and Himanshu Ganolia, all residents of Ward No. 1 in Bagh Road, Ram Mandi.

Prompt action by the police resulted in the arrest of the trio. They were taken into custody and produced before a court, which granted police remand for further interrogation. Officers are investigating whether the group was acting independently or if they were part of a larger theft network operating across the region.

Security Concerns and ATM Vulnerability

Security analysts and local residents expressed concerns over the incident, highlighting that ATM booths located outside bank premises are vulnerable to theft attempts, especially during night or low-visibility periods. Although no cash was lost in this case, the damage to CCTV cameras and ATM shutters raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures.

Police officials have assured the public that enhanced surveillance, better lighting, and regular patrols will be implemented to strengthen security around ATM booths. They also urged citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity near ATMs or bank branches to law enforcement authorities.

Importance of Technological Support in Crime Prevention

The successful identification and arrest of the suspects in this case underline the critical role of CCTV cameras and digital evidence in thwarting crimes before any significant loss occurs. Police personnel involved in the investigation praised the community for timely reporting and stressed that cooperation between citizens and law enforcement is key to maintaining law and order.

In wake of this incident, bank managers and security experts are discussing additional measures such as installing alarm systems and reinforcing ATM booths with stronger physical barriers against theft attempts.
