Drugs Recovered From Prisoners During Jail Checking in Ludhiana, Case Registered Against Two

Date:

The discovery of narcotic substances from prisoners during routine jail inspections has once again raised serious concerns about security and monitoring inside prisons in Punjab. Despite strict regulations and regular checking procedures, incidents of drugs being found with inmates continue to surface, raising questions about how such substances are entering correctional facilities.

Recently, a similar incident came to light in Ludhiana where authorities recovered drugs from two prisoners during a search operation. Following the recovery, police registered a case against the accused under relevant legal provisions.

Drugs Recovered During Routine Search

According to officials, the incident occurred during a routine checking process carried out inside the jail premises. Jail authorities conducted a thorough search of inmates as part of security procedures aimed at preventing illegal items from entering the prison environment.

During the search, suspicious material was recovered from two undertrial prisoners. The jail staff immediately reported the matter to the police, after which legal proceedings were initiated.

Details of the Accused Prisoners

Police officials stated that the first accused has been identified as Sumit Khanna, son of Jaspal Khanna. During the search, officials recovered approximately 16 grams of sulfa (a narcotic substance) from his possession.

In another case, Ramandeep Singh, son of Raj Kumar, was also found with a small quantity of narcotics. Authorities recovered around 1.5 grams of a white-colored intoxicating substance from him.

Both accused were already lodged in jail as undertrial prisoners. The recovery of narcotics from their possession has further complicated their legal situation.

Police Register Case Under NDPS and Prison Act

Following the recovery, the jail authorities filed an official complaint. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case against the two accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Prison Act.

Investigating officer Dinesh Kumar confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation and further legal action will be taken as per the law.

Questions Raised Over Jail Administration

The incident has once again sparked debate regarding security inside prisons. Experts and observers argue that repeated recovery of drugs from inmates indicates potential loopholes in prison monitoring systems.

Authorities are expected to tighten security measures, increase surprise inspections, and implement stricter monitoring to prevent the entry of narcotics into prisons.

With the Punjab government already facing challenges related to drug abuse in the state, such incidents highlight the need for stronger vigilance inside correctional facilities as well.
