Banks Closed in Several Cities on March 31 for Mahavir Jayanti; RBI Issues Special Instruction

Date:

Mahavir Jayanti Holiday Impacts Banking Services

Several bank branches across India observed closures on March 31 due to the festival of Mahavir Jayanti, one of the most important religious occasions for the Jain community. The day marks the birth anniversary of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara in Jainism, whose teachings of non-violence, truth, and compassion continue to inspire millions.

Because the festival is recognized as a public holiday in multiple states, banks in several cities announced limited services or closures. Customers planning branch visits were advised to check the state-wise holiday schedule issued by the banking authorities before heading to their nearest bank branch.

RBI Cancels Holiday for Some Banks Due to Financial Year End

Despite Mahavir Jayanti being listed as a holiday in the banking calendar, the Reserve Bank of India issued a special directive allowing certain banks to remain open on March 31. The reason behind this unusual move is that March 31 marks the last day of the financial year in India.

Banks handling government transactions—commonly referred to as “agency banks”—were instructed to stay operational to complete essential financial activities such as government payments, tax collections, and account settlements.

According to banking officials, keeping these branches open ensures that all financial records and transactions for the fiscal year 2025-26 are properly completed before the books are closed.

Cities Where Banks Observed Holiday

Under the holiday list issued by the RBI, banks in several major cities were scheduled to remain closed for Mahavir Jayanti celebrations. These included cities such as:

  • Ahmedabad
  • Mumbai and Nagpur
  • Bengaluru
  • Chennai
  • Jaipur
  • Lucknow and Kanpur
  • Kolkata
  • New Delhi
  • Patna
  • Ranchi
  • Raipur

The closures were not uniform nationwide because bank holidays in India are often determined by regional festivals and local government notifications.

Online Banking and ATMs Remain Operational

Even though some physical bank branches remained closed for the holiday, digital banking services were not affected. Customers continued to access services such as:

  • Mobile banking apps
  • Internet banking platforms
  • ATM withdrawals and deposits
  • UPI payments and fund transfers

These digital facilities ensured that individuals and businesses could continue financial transactions without interruption despite the holiday.

Importance of Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavira, a revered spiritual teacher in Jainism who emphasized the principles of ahimsa (non-violence), truth, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-possessiveness.

The festival is celebrated with great devotion by the Jain community through temple visits, religious processions, prayers, and charitable activities. Many cities organize public events and spiritual discourses to spread the message of peace and harmony.

Advisory for Bank Customers

Banking experts advise customers to check the official holiday calendar or contact their bank before planning important financial work on festival days. Since holidays vary across states and cities, awareness of local schedules helps avoid inconvenience.

The RBI also encourages customers to use digital banking channels whenever possible, especially during holidays or high-traffic periods at bank branches.
