Widow Duped of ₹63 Lakh After Marriage Promise: Moga Man Booked for Fraud and Exploitation

Date:

A Relationship Built on Trust Turns Into an Alleged Fraud

A shocking case of alleged fraud, exploitation, and financial cheating has surfaced in Punjab’s Moga district. A widow from Rupnagar has accused a Moga resident of trapping her in a false romantic relationship, promising marriage, exploiting her emotionally, and allegedly swindling more than ₹63 lakh from her over several years. Following an investigation, Moga Police have registered a case against the accused under various legal provisions.

Widow’s Struggle After Husband’s Death

According to the complaint, the woman was married in 2005 and had a son. Her husband passed away due to a heart attack in 2014, leaving her to raise her child alone. Determined to secure a better future, she pursued higher education and worked in different companies while also exploring opportunities to move abroad.

The complainant later started working in the visa consultancy sector and was introduced to the accused through a mutual acquaintance. What began as a professional connection gradually developed into a personal relationship.

Marriage Promise and Financial Transactions

The woman alleged that the accused repeatedly assured her that he intended to marry her. Trusting his promises, she invested heavily in their future together. She reportedly helped establish business operations and provided substantial financial assistance for vehicles, property-related expenses, and other personal needs.

According to her statement, the accused continuously delayed marriage while convincing her to provide more money. Over time, the amount allegedly taken from her reached more than ₹63.61 lakh.

Serious Allegations of Exploitation

The complaint further states that the accused maintained physical relations with her under the assurance of marriage. The woman also alleged that when she became pregnant in 2022, the accused pressured her into terminating the pregnancy.

She claimed that despite investing money in residential arrangements and property-related expenses, the accused never fulfilled his promise of marriage. Later, she reportedly discovered that he was simultaneously involved with another woman.

Passport and Documents Allegedly Retained

The complainant further alleged that the accused kept possession of her passport and other important documents. She also expressed concerns for her safety and that of her minor son, claiming that the accused threatened her and boasted about having influential connections.

The woman stated that she feared retaliation if she continued to pursue legal action against him.

Police Investigation and Case Registration

After receiving the complaint, authorities in Rupnagar conducted a detailed inquiry. The investigation reportedly found sufficient grounds supporting the allegations raised by the complainant.

Since most of the events mentioned in the complaint were linked to Moga district, the matter was forwarded to Moga Police for further legal action. Acting on legal advice and investigation findings, City Moga Police registered a case against the accused.

Police officials have confirmed that further investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to arrest the accused.

Growing Concerns Over Relationship-Based Financial Fraud

The case highlights a growing trend of financial and emotional fraud carried out under the guise of romantic relationships and marriage promises. Experts advise individuals to exercise caution when making significant financial commitments and to verify claims before entering into long-term arrangements.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to gather additional evidence and record statements to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud.
