Serena Williams Returned to Tennis, But Will Roger Federer? Swiss Legend Gives a Brutal Reply

Date:

Tennis fans around the world were left wondering if 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer would follow in the footsteps of Serena Williams and return to professional tennis. However, the 45-year-old Swiss icon has officially shut down all speculation regarding a comeback. Federer gave a candid and direct response, making it clear that his professional playing days are permanently behind him.

Both Roger Federer and Serena Williams stepped away from the sport in September 2022, marking the end of a glorious era. While Serena recently surprised fans by making a return in doubles play and taking up wildcard entries, Federer insists that his physical condition and current lifestyle leave no room for competitive tennis.

Why a Return is Completely Off the Table

When asked directly if he had any plans to make a comeback similar to Serena, Federer dismissed the idea immediately. He pointed out the massive physical and procedural challenges that stand in the way of any professional tour return.

“No, no, no, no, no, not at all. Thanks for asking. I wasn’t sure if the question was going to get asked, but I’m happy you did so I can clarify in case anybody thought so,” Federer stated. He explained that entering the mandatory anti-doping pool, maintaining a grueling tour schedule, and dealing with physical wear and tear are obstacles he has no desire to face again.

Focusing on a Pain-Free Post-Retirement Life

Federer made it clear that his primary goal after retirement is maintaining daily health rather than pushing his body to extreme limits. Years of high-level competition took a severe toll on his knee and overall physical state.

He shared that he barely finds enough time to participate in exhibition matches, let alone commit to the strenuous demands of the ATP Tour. Federer expressed contentment with feeling healthy in his day-to-day routine, emphasizing that he is now purely a passionate fan of the sport who enjoys watching matches from the stands.

Two Legend Journeys: Federer vs. Serena Williams

While Serena Williams chose to test the waters of competitive tennis again—appearing in grass-court doubles and Wimbledon wildcards—Federer’s post-retirement journey is moving in a completely different direction.

Federer leaves behind one of the most celebrated legacies in sporting history, featuring 20 Grand Slam titles and 310 weeks at World No. 1. Rather than risking further injury or disrupting his balanced personal life, the Swiss maestro is completely comfortable keeping his legendary career safely in the history books.
