India’s Major Announcement: Ban Lifted on US-bound International Postal Services, New DDP System for Customs Duties Introduced

Date:

International Desk
The Government of India has announced the full resumption of all categories of international postal services to the United States starting October 15. This decision follows the lifting of a temporary suspension that was implemented on August 22, 2025, due to updated regulations by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). According to the Department of Posts under India’s Ministry of Communications, the services are being reinstated following the successful implementation of a new Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) system.

Key Features of the New DDP System

  • Advance Collection of Customs Duties:
All customs duties on parcels sent to the U.S. will now be collected in India itself, before dispatch, and will be directly remitted to U.S. Customs authorities.

  • No Additional Charges for Recipients:
Parcel recipients in the U.S. will no longer face unexpected or extra customs charges upon delivery.

  • No Change in International Postage Rates:
The existing international postage rates will remain unchanged, benefiting MSMEs, handicraft artisans, e-commerce sellers, and small businesses.

  • All Categories of Mail Now Allowed:
Services such as EMS, air parcels, registered letters, and tracked packets can now be booked for delivery to the United States.

Benefits and Ease of Use

The introduction of the DDP system is expected to:

  • Speed up customs clearance for parcels.

  • Provide transparent and predictable costs for senders.

  • Ensure hassle-free delivery for U.S. customers, with no surprise charges.

Additionally, postal circle heads have been directed to organize awareness programs for exporters and small businesses to familiarize them with the new system.

This initiative is considered a significant milestone in strengthening India’s global postal and export logistics network. It aligns with key national initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, ‘One District One Product (ODOP)’, and the ‘Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra (DNK)’ scheme.
