Tragic Incident in Haryana: Two Para Commandos Swept Away in Yamuna During Army Training Exercise

Date:

A routine military exercise turned into a high-stakes search operation in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district after two Special Forces personnel were swept away by swift currents in the Yamuna River. The incident occurred near the Hathnikund Barrage when a team of elite Indian Army Para Commandos was conducting scheduled water-crossing and combat readiness training. Emergency rescue teams, local authorities, and specialized military units were immediately mobilized to locate the missing soldiers amidst challenging river conditions.

High-Risk Training Exercise Near Hathnikund Barrage

The training session was being conducted as part of regular specialized combat maneuvers involving high-intensity water-crossing operations. Armed forces units often utilize the challenging water dynamics near the Hathnikund Barrage to simulate real-world tactical scenarios. During the exercise, sudden changes in river velocity and strong undercurrents overwhelmed two commandos, causing them to lose grip and get pulled downstream into deeper waters before their teammates could pull them to safety.

Massive Joint Search and Rescue Operation Deployed

Following the sudden disappearance of the commandos, an immediate multi-agency response was launched. The Indian Army dispatched specialized search teams equipped with motorboats, diving gear, and thermal imaging equipment. Local police, along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), joined the search efforts. Search units have expanded their grid along the course of the Yamuna River downstream from the barrage, battling turbulent currents and murky water conditions.

Local Administration Coordinates Emergency Response

Yamunanagar district officials quickly established a command center to monitor rescue progress and coordinate resources between civilian agencies and the military. Local divers and fishermen familiar with the riverbed topography were enlisted to assist deep-water search parties. Riverbank checkpoints have been alerted along the path leading toward neighboring downstream districts to ensure continuous observation across all possible search zones.

Ongoing Efforts and Safety Protocols

As the search operation continues, military officials have initiated a standard review of training safety protocols and environmental conditions at the site during the time of the incident. High seasonal water volume from upstream discharges can rapidly change river behavior, creating dangerous undercurrents. Senior army officers remain present on site to oversee search patterns, while authorities maintain close communication with the families of the missing personnel.
