The Punjab government has formally notified an 8% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees, raising the allowance from 42% to 50% with effect from September 1, 2026. The decision also extends the same increase in Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners and family pensioners.
According to a report by The Times of India, the Finance Department issued the notification on Wednesday. The enhanced DA is payable with September’s salary, in accordance with applicable government provisions.
8% DA Hike: What Government Employees Need to Know
The latest notification brings financial relief to Punjab government employees and pensioners amid rising household expenses.
Key details of the announcement include:

The revised Dearness Relief rate for pensioners and family pensioners will also rise from 42% to 50%.
Decision Follows Meeting With Employee Unions
The notification follows a September 18 meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and representatives of employee unions.
During the meeting, employee representatives raised several concerns, including the release of pending DA instalments. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the enhanced allowance is intended to provide financial support to approximately eight lakh government employees and pensioners.
The government has also reiterated its commitment to continued dialogue with employee unions to address outstanding concerns.
Pending DA Arrears and Court Proceedings
The notification comes amid ongoing legal proceedings concerning pending DA and DR payments.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier directed the state government to release pending DA/DR instalments. The state subsequently approached the Supreme Court, citing financial constraints and the difficulty of disbursing substantial arrears immediately.
The newly notified 8% increase is a separate development from the issue of outstanding DA arrears. The status and payment of those arrears remain an important concern for employees and pensioners.
What This Means for Punjab Employees and Pensioners
With the revised DA rate now notified, eligible state government employees will receive the enhanced allowance under the applicable payment provisions. Pensioners and family pensioners will receive the corresponding increase in Dearness Relief.
However, the notification of the revised rate should not be interpreted as confirmation that all previously pending DA arrears have been cleared.
