Harmanpreet Kaur Will Wait for SP Promotion Despite World Cup Glory Punjab to Reward Three Cricketers ₹1.5 Crore Each

Date:

Big Cash Reward for Champions

The Punjab Government has decided to honour three local stars from the Indian women’s cricket team with a cash award of ₹1.5 crore each following their World Cup triumph. The trio includes captain Harmanpreet Kaur, along with Harleen Deol and Amanjot Kaur.

Promotion Delay for Harmanpreet Kaur

While the financial reward is on the cards, Harmanpreet Kaur—appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Punjab in 2024—will not receive an immediate promotion to Superintendent of Police (SP). Sources say that according to service rules, she needs to complete additional years of service before becoming eligible for the next rank.

Government Jobs for Other Players

In the meantime, Harleen Deol and Amanjot Kaur are expected to be offered state government jobs as part of their recognition package. The decision is analogous to previous instances where success in international sports earned athletes bureaucratic opportunities.

Context and Implications

Harmanpreet’s police career encountered a setback back in 2018 when questions arose over her graduation degree. She was demoted from DSP to constable but later reinstated after completing her degree via distance education. Now, despite her stellar on-field performance, she must abide by the formal promotion timeline. The government’s dual approach—cash reward plus selective job offers—signals its intent to uplift women athletes while maintaining institutional rules.
