Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Relative Says Pilot Was Found Gripping Controls Even After Death

Date:

A Grieving Relative Shares a Chilling Observation

A deeply emotional account has emerged from the aftermath of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash, in which a family member of three victims claimed that the aircraft captain’s body was discovered in a seated position with his hands still gripping the flight controls.

The statement was made by Romin Vohra, a resident of Gujarat’s Kheda district, who lost three close relatives in the tragedy. His observation has reignited public discussion over the final moments inside the cockpit and the efforts made by the pilots to save the aircraft.

What the Relative Claimed

According to Vohra, he entered the mortuary where victims’ remains were kept and saw the body of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal. He said the pilot appeared to remain in an upright seated position, still holding the aircraft’s dual-handled yoke—the control column used to steer the plane.

Vohra described the scene as unforgettable and emotionally overwhelming, saying it suggested the captain was attempting to control the aircraft until the very last seconds before impact.

About the Air India Flight 171 Crash

The Air India flight, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025. The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down within seconds of becoming airborne, striking the hostel block of B. J. Medical College.

The accident claimed 260 lives, including passengers, crew members, and people on the ground. Only one passenger survived the disaster, making it one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India’s recent history.

Investigation Still Ongoing

The crash remains under investigation by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Preliminary findings suggested both engines lost thrust after fuel control switches moved from RUN to CUTOFF shortly after takeoff, but the final report has not yet been released.

Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to avoid speculation until the investigation is complete.

A Story That Captures the Human Cost

Beyond technical findings, Vohra’s account has become a powerful reminder of the courage and responsibility carried by pilots during emergencies. His statement has resonated widely, symbolizing the determination of the flight crew to fight for every possible second.

For families who lost loved ones, the emotional scars remain profound, and the nation continues to await definitive answers about what caused the catastrophe.
