Religious Trip Turns Tragic
A heartbreaking incident took place near Lohand Khad in the Kiratpur Sahib area of Punjab when a young man lost his life after being swept away by the strong water current. The victim had reportedly visited the region along with his family during a religious trip to Sri Anandpur Sahib and Mata Naina Devi.
The family stopped near Lohand Khad while returning from their pilgrimage. What began as a brief halt soon turned into a tragedy when a family member got trapped in the fast-flowing water. The victim immediately jumped into the stream in an attempt to save his relative but was himself caught in the powerful current and disappeared.
Rescue Teams Launched Search Operation
Following the incident, local authorities and emergency response teams were informed. A search operation was launched without delay, with personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed to the area.
Rescue workers searched continuously despite difficult conditions. Teams monitored different sections of the water channel and used specialized equipment to trace the missing person. The operation continued for several hours as officials worked tirelessly to locate him.
Body Found Downstream
After an extensive search effort, the SDRF team successfully recovered the body from the water. Officials stated that the body was found approximately 1.5 kilometers downstream from the location where the victim had been swept away.
The recovery brought an end to the search operation but left the family devastated. Authorities followed standard procedures and initiated legal formalities after the recovery.
Police Begin Legal Proceedings
Police officials confirmed that proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code were initiated. The body was sent for post-mortem examination before being handed over to the family.
Investigators stated that the incident appears to be accidental. Local authorities have once again urged visitors to avoid entering rivers, streams, and seasonal water channels during periods of strong water flow, as such locations can become extremely dangerous without warning.

Every year, several drowning incidents are reported from rivers, canals, and seasonal streams across Punjab and neighboring states. Experts emphasize that even experienced swimmers can struggle against strong currents.
Authorities advise tourists and pilgrims visiting hilly regions and water bodies to follow safety guidelines, stay away from deep areas, and avoid entering water where warning signs are displayed. Quick decisions made during rescue attempts can sometimes place additional lives at risk.
