China Ramps Up Coast Guard Pressure Around Taiwan, Threatening Critical Pacific Supply Lines

Date:

Surge in Maritime Operations Near Taiwanese Waters

Taiwanese maritime security agencies have reported a dramatic increase in Chinese government vessel activity surrounding the island. According to data provided by Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA), sightings of Chinese ships—including coast guard vessels and oceanographic research craft—spiked by more than 80% over the past month. Officials noted that Beijing is steadily escalating its “grey zone” tactics, using civilian law enforcement assets rather than direct naval power to assert control and stretch Taiwan’s maritime defense forces thin.

Repurposed Naval Ships and Lawfare Tactics

A significant factor in Beijing’s strategy is the deployment of former naval destroyers and frigates converted into China Coast Guard (CCG) patrol vessels. Repainted and equipped with advanced endurance and military-grade capabilities, these heavy ships now regularly operate in pairs near Taiwan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Taipei has criticized these maneuvers as “lawfare”—an effort by China to establish an illegal legal pretext for maritime administration over waters surrounding the self-governing island.

Risks to Pacific Commercial Shipping and Supply Routes

Beyond visual intimidation, Chinese vessels have reportedly begun broadcasting radio messages to passing international commercial ships, demanding information on port entry and cargo details. While merchant vessels have ignored these queries on Taiwanese guidance, security analysts warn that Beijing is rehearsing for a potential naval blockade. Such actions could sever Taiwan’s critical supply lifelines in the Western Pacific during a crisis.

Taiwan Prepares Countermeasures and Joint Drills

In response to the growing operational strain, Taiwan is stepping up both tabletop simulations and live-fire maritime exercises alongside its Navy. Authorities in Taipei remain committed to asserting sovereignty and maintaining open sea lanes, while international observers from the United States and European nations continue to express deep concern over escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
