Former Punjab IG Amar Singh Chahal Dies by Suicide in Patiala A Victim of ₹8.10 Crore Online Fraud

Date:

The Tragic Incident in Patiala The Punjab police fraternity and the residents of Patiala were left in deep shock on Monday, December 22, 2025, following the tragic news of former Inspector General (IG) Amar Singh Chahal. The retired high-ranking officer reportedly attempted suicide by shooting himself at his residence in Patiala. Although he was immediately rushed to Park Hospital in critical condition with a severe chest injury, reports indicate that he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The Trigger: A Massive ₹8.10 Crore Online Scam Investigations have revealed a harrowing motive behind this extreme step. A 12-page suicide note recovered from the scene, addressed to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab, paints a picture of immense financial distress. Chahal was reportedly a victim of a sophisticated online fraud amounting to approximately ₹8.10 crore. The note detailed how cybercriminals had systematically drained his life savings through fraudulent investment schemes, leaving him in a state of terminal despair.

A Career Defined by Controversy and Service Amar Singh Chahal was a well-known figure in the Punjab Police. However, his career was also marked by the shadow of the 2015 Faridkot firing cases (Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan). As a senior officer during the unrest following the sacrilege incidents, Chahal was named in a chargesheet by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for his alleged role in the police action. He had been battling multiple legal hurdles and court cases related to this incident for several years.

The Growing Menace of Cyber Fraud This incident has cast a spotlight on the rising tide of cybercrime in India, which now targets even high-ranking former officials and educated professionals. Despite his years of experience in law enforcement, the sophistication of the online scam proved overwhelming. Patiala SSP Varun Sharma confirmed that police teams are now investigating the digital trail of the fraud to identify the perpetrators who pushed a veteran officer to such an edge.

Legacy and Reactions The news has triggered widespread debate over the mental health support available to retired officers and the vulnerability of seniors to digital financial crimes. Colleagues remember Chahal as a sharp officer during his prime, while critics point toward the unresolved legal battles he faced. His death marks a somber chapter in the history of Punjab’s law enforcement.
