Google Responds to Speculation Around AI Mode in Chrome
Google has officially clarified that its AI Mode will not replace the traditional Google Search experience in Chrome. The statement came after reports emerged that an experimental feature in Chrome Canary was redirecting search queries from the browser’s address bar directly into AI Mode conversations instead of displaying standard search results.
The development sparked discussions across the technology industry, with many users and SEO professionals questioning whether Google was preparing to fundamentally change the way people search online. However, the company has now confirmed that the feature appeared due to an error and that there are currently no plans to make AI Mode the default search experience in Chrome.
What Triggered the Confusion?
The confusion began when Windows Report discovered an experimental flag in Chrome Canary, Google’s testing version of the Chrome browser. The flag, titled “Fulfill Searchbox Queries in AI Mode,” redirected user searches from the omnibox directly into AI-generated conversations.
Because Chrome Canary is often used to test upcoming features before they are rolled out publicly, many observers assumed the change represented Google’s future direction for Search. The feature effectively bypassed the familiar search results page and instead presented users with AI-generated responses.
Google Calls It an Error
Google quickly responded to the growing speculation. Rajan Patel, Vice President of Search Engineering at Google, clarified that the AI Mode flag was introduced unintentionally.
According to Patel, the appearance of the feature in Chrome Canary was an error and should not be interpreted as a signal that Google intends to replace traditional search results. He emphasized that Google has no plans to make AI Mode the default experience for Chrome users.
What Is AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s advanced search experience powered by its Gemini AI models. Unlike conventional search, which provides a list of web links, AI Mode generates conversational answers based on a user’s query.
