India Leads Global ChatGPT Usage; Coding & Work-Linked Use Soars, OpenAI Data Shows

Date:

New data from OpenAI Signals reveals that India has become the largest market outside the United States for ChatGPT, with more than 100 million weekly active users engaging with the AI platform. Beyond casual use, Indian users are increasingly relying on ChatGPT for coding, data analysis, learning, and work-related tasks — leading global usage trends in many categories.

ChatGPT Adoption Surges in India

According to OpenAI’s recently published Signals data, Indian users are pushing the boundaries of AI adoption. India now ranks as the biggest ChatGPT market outside the US, driven by widespread use across technical, professional, and educational tasks rather than simple chat queries.

The Signals initiative by OpenAI provides anonymized, aggregated usage insights showing how consumers interact with ChatGPT across regions and task types. The data highlights India’s high engagement, particularly around work-related and skill-building use cases.

Coding & Data Analysis Lead the Way

One of the most notable trends is the heavy reliance on ChatGPT for coding and technical tasks. Indian users ask nearly three times more coding-related questions than the global median — substantially outpacing other countries. Tools like Codex, OpenAI’s coding assistant, also show strong traction in India with weekly usage increasing several folds.

Data analysis tasks, where users request help analyzing data or creating insights from datasets, are also significantly above global averages — showing nearly four times the global median usage. These patterns indicate that Indian users are integrating AI deeply into professional workflows.

Work & Productivity Use Cases

Unlike some regions where ChatGPT usage is dominated by entertainment or casual queries, India’s usage is strongly work-linked. Roughly 35% of all ChatGPT messages in India relate to work tasks — higher than the global average of about 30%. Users are leveraging the AI for tasks such as:

  • Drafting and editing business documents
  • Debugging code and developing software
  • Accelerating project workflows
  • Troubleshooting tech problems

This shift reflects a maturation of AI adoption from novelty to productivity accelerator in Indian workplaces and among professionals.

Young Users Driving Technical Adoption

Another key insight is the demographic distribution of ChatGPT usage in India. Nearly half of all interaction messages from the country come from users aged 18-24, while users between 18-34 account for nearly 80% of total usage. This young base is fueling demand for technical, educational, and career-oriented applications.

Outside work, Indians also use ChatGPT heavily for:

  • Practical guidance and advice
  • General information
  • Writing assistance

Approximately one-third of messages are linked to practical guidance outside of professional contexts, showing the AI’s growing role in everyday decision-making and learning.

Why This Matters

India’s surge in ChatGPT adoption reflects several converging trends:

  • A large and young digitally savvy population

  • Increasing demand for AI-assisted learning and professional growth

  • Rapid integration of AI tools into education and industry workflows

OpenAI’s Signals initiative aims to ground the broader AI debate in real data rather than hype, showing that India’s leap in practical AI usage is measurable and significant.
