India–Russia Summit 2025: Key Announcements from Modi–Putin Joint Statement

Date:

The 2025 India–Russia Summit concluded with a comprehensive joint statement issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders reaffirmed their long-standing strategic partnership and unveiled several key agreements covering defence, trade, energy, technology and global security cooperation. The summit highlighted the deepening of bilateral ties and set the roadmap for the next decade of collaboration between the two nations.

Major Defence Agreements Finalised

Defence cooperation formed the cornerstone of the joint statement. India and Russia agreed to strengthen joint production of military equipment under the “Make in India” framework. This includes co-manufacturing of engines, spare parts, ammunition and upgrading existing defence platforms. Both nations also agreed to expand training exchanges between their armed forces and hold more joint military exercises.

The leaders expressed commitment to continuing defence technology transfer, focusing on self-reliance in critical sectors such as aerospace, missiles and advanced battlefield systems. The joint statement emphasized long-term military cooperation as a vital pillar of the strategic partnership.

Boost to Trade and Economic Cooperation

A major highlight of the summit was the ambitious plan to elevate bilateral trade to a significantly higher volume by 2030. India and Russia agreed to diversify trade beyond traditional sectors like defence and energy. New areas of cooperation include pharmaceuticals, agro-products, steel, fertilizers, transport engineering, information technology and digital services.

Both sides also identified supply chain security as a key priority and committed to reducing trade barriers, promoting investments and strengthening connectivity through the operationalisation of the Chennai–Vladivostok Maritime Corridor. Discussions also focused on local currency settlement mechanisms to reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Energy Partnership Strengthened Further

The joint statement highlighted energy cooperation as one of the strongest pillars of the India–Russia relationship. Russia assured continued support in supplying crude oil, LNG and coal to India at stable and predictable rates. Both sides agreed to expand collaboration in nuclear energy, including ongoing projects and future reactor construction. India welcomed Russia’s proposal to support renewable energy initiatives, hydrogen production and technology research.

Cooperation in Science, Technology and Space

Technology and innovation were given significant attention in the joint statement. India and Russia agreed to collaborate in artificial intelligence, space exploration, satellite launches, cybersecurity and quantum computing. Both leaders recognized the need to protect digital infrastructure and committed to enhancing cooperation on cyber-crime prevention.

The two nations also agreed to expand student exchanges, higher education partnerships and joint research programs across engineering, medicine, environment and space science.

Global and Regional Issues Discussed

Prime Minister Modi and President Putin spoke extensively about maintaining peace and stability in Asia, including the Indo-Pacific region. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to a multipolar global order and emphasized the need for reform within international organizations.

The two sides called for diplomatic dialogue to resolve conflicts peacefully and reaffirmed their cooperation in fighting terrorism, radicalisation, drug trafficking and organized crime.

A Partnership for the Future

The 2025 summit demonstrated that India and Russia continue to value their time-tested relationship while preparing for future challenges. The joint statement reflects a vision of deeper defence engagement, expanded trade, energy security, scientific growth and strong geopolitical coordination. Both leaders emphasised that the India–Russia partnership is built on trust, mutual respect and shared strategic interests.
