Iran is currently experiencing widespread anti-government protests, leading to significant civil unrest across the nation. Reports indicate that at least 62 individuals have lost their lives in these demonstrations, which initially began last month.
National Restrictions Imposed
In response to the escalating protests, authorities have implemented a ban on internet access and telephone communications. Government media channels have attributed the instigation of violence to what they describe as “terrorist agents” linked to America and Israel.
The Associated Press has reported the death toll, while the US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) states that over 65 people have died in the nationwide protests, which entered their 13th day on January 9.
Protests Spread and Travel Affected
These demonstrations, which originated in two Tehran markets on December 28, 2025, initially targeted rising inflation and the depreciating value of the rial. They have since evolved into a nationwide movement, affecting 512 locations across 180 cities in 31 provinces.
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology confirmed that the decision to halt internet services was made by security officials due to the prevailing conditions. Furthermore, travel has been impacted, with at least 17 flights between Dubai and Iran being cancelled. Turkish Airlines has also announced the cancellation of several flights scheduled to pass over Iranian airspace amidst the ongoing disturbances.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has publicly criticized US President Donald Trump, labeling him as arrogant and accusing him of responsibility for the deaths of Iranians.
