IRCTC Makes OTP Verification Mandatory From December 1 for Train Bookings

Date:

Indian Railways has introduced one of its most important changes in the ticket-booking system — OTP verification has been made compulsory from December 1 for all types of train bookings. This includes online bookings on the IRCTC website, the IRCTC mobile app, offline PRS counter tickets, as well as bookings through authorized agents. The new rule is aimed at increasing transparency, preventing fraud, and ensuring that genuine passengers get fair access to tickets.

What Exactly Is the New OTP Rule?

Under the new system, passengers must verify their mobile number through a One-Time Password (OTP) every time they book a train ticket. When a user attempts to book any ticket — whether a normal ticket, Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or even a reservation through an agent — an OTP will be sent to the mobile number provided. The booking will proceed only after the OTP is correctly entered. Without completing this verification step, the ticket booking will not be confirmed.

This means the days of booking tickets without personal mobile verification are over. Railways wants each ticket to be linked to a valid, active mobile number so that proper tracking and identification can be ensured.

Why IRCTC Introduced OTP Verification

Railways has been facing several issues in its ticket-booking system for years. The biggest challenges have been:

  • Fraudulent ticket bookings

  • Bulk ticket blocking by illegal software

  • Fake accounts created by agents

  • Manipulation of Tatkal booking windows

  • Misuse of passenger details

Thousands of passengers could not get confirmed tickets because a large chunk of seats would get booked in seconds by illegal automated tools. These tools were used by touts and agents to buy tickets in bulk and then sell them at higher prices.

By introducing OTP verification, IRCTC aims to ensure that:

  • The person booking the ticket is a real passenger

  • The mobile number belongs to the user

  • Automated bots cannot bypass the system

  • Unauthorized agents cannot misuse the booking window

  • Ticketing becomes fairer for genuine users

This step will significantly reduce unethical practices and create a level playing field for all passengers.

Who Will Be Affected by This Rule?

This rule applies to every passenger, regardless of how they book tickets. The OTP requirement is valid for:

  • IRCTC website bookings

  • IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app

  • Reservation counter tickets

  • Bookings through authorized agents

  • Tatkal and Premium Tatkal bookings

  • AC and sleeper class bookings

  • Concession and senior citizen tickets

Whether you are a frequent traveler or someone who books occasionally, you must have an active mobile number ready at the time of booking.
