Tricolour Unfurled on Uncharted 6,048m Lahaul Peak: Gimnar Singh Sets World Paragliding Record

Date:

A new golden chapter has been written in Himachal Pradesh’s adventure sports history. A 10-member expedition team successfully scaled an unnamed and untouched 6,048-meter high peak located in the Lahaul-Spiti district, unfurling the Indian Tricolour at the summit for the first time. During this historic mission, Gimnar Singh, a paragliding instructor at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, scripted a world record by successfully launching a paraglider from this 6,048-meter snow-capped summit. He has officially become the first person in the world to attempt and complete a high-altitude paragliding flight from such an extreme elevation.

Historic Expedition Concluded in 5 Days

Organized under the auspices of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), this high-risk adventure mission kicked off on August 22. Battling sub-zero temperatures, depleted oxygen levels, and razor-sharp rocky terrains, the courageous team pushed through intense physical challenges. Demonstrating exceptional endurance and tactical mountaineering skills, the team accomplished the summit push within just five days, triumphantly raising the national flag on August 26.

Peak to Be Officially Named After the Expedition Team

Expedition Leader Desh Raj stated that the 6,048-meter peak previously lacked an official geographical name. Under international mountaineering norms, when an expedition team achieves the first-ever successful ascent of an uncharted summit, the team or its members hold the privilege of naming it. Desh Raj confirmed that a comprehensive expedition report will soon be submitted to the governing authorities to formally finalize the peak’s official nomenclature.

Meet the Brave 10-Member Team

The successful execution of this grueling mission was made possible by a dedicated 10-member team of skilled climbers and adventure enthusiasts. Alongside world-record pilot instructor Gimnar Singh, the expedition featured Lakshya Dutt, Ram Kumar, Ankit Singh, Ranjit Thakur, Gaurav, Saurav, and female mountaineer Kela Devi. Team coordination, mutual trust, and sheer determination enabled the group to conquer the untouched summit and bring pride to the nation.

Himachal Pradesh Emerging as a Premier Global Mountaineering Hub

Sharing details after the summit, Gimnar Singh highlighted that the Lahaul valley hosts several peaks above 6,000 meters that remain unexplored. Mountaineers seeking high-altitude technical climbs can now access both the 6,100-meter Hoonam Peak and this newly conquered 6,048-meter peak within Himachal Pradesh itself. Previously, adventure enthusiasts had to travel to Leh-Ladakh for similar high-altitude expeditions. Opening these domestic routes will attract national and international trekkers, boost eco-tourism, and generate sustainable self-employment opportunities for local mountain communities.

Promoting Adventure Sports to Youth and Fighting Substance Abuse

Beyond mountaineering benchmarks, the primary objective of this expedition was to inspire young people to embrace outdoor sports and physically demanding adventures. Team leaders emphasized that modern sedentary lifestyles are weakening youth both physically and mentally. Engaging in mountaineering builds resilience, discipline, and stamina. Furthermore, channeling youth energy into constructive adventure activities serves as an effective deterrent against drug addiction and substance abuse.
