Major Revelations in LPU Violence Probe: SIT Tracking Outsiders and Social Media Influencers

Date:

Background of the LPU Campus Unrest

Tensions flared dramatically at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara following widespread unverified rumors circulated on social media platforms regarding an alleged incident inside the campus. What began as a peaceful student gathering quickly escalated into widespread vandalism, stone-pelting, and clashes late at night. Angry crowds damaged university property, targeted campus infrastructure, and damaged several vehicles, including setting police vehicles on fire near the main gates and along the adjacent National Highway (GT Road). In response to the growing chaos, local authorities deployed heavy police contingents across three neighboring districts to bring the situation under control.

Key Findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT)

To uncover the full truth behind the violence, the Punjab Police constituted dedicated Special Investigation Teams (SITs). Recent updates from senior police officials, including DIG Naveen Singla and Special DGP officers, indicate significant breakthroughs. Investigators have registered multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) under various sections of the law at the Satnampura Police Station. The SIT has arrested numerous individuals across multiple states, including Punjab, Jammu, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh (Mandi). Among those detained is a individual arrested in Mandi for climbing on the iconic decommissioned MIG-23UM fighter jet displayed outside the university campus during the riot.

Role of Social Media Rumors and Outside Elements

A primary focus of the police probe is identifying the instigators who weaponized digital platforms to incite violence. Preliminary investigation revealed that misleading posts and manipulated video clips were circulated online to provoke students. Digital forensic experts are analyzing IP addresses, chat logs, and specific social media accounts linked to influencers and external agitators. Furthermore, senior police officers noted that masked outsiders equipped with walkie-talkies infiltrated the university grounds during the night, deliberately escalating a peaceful student protest into planned arson and rioting.

High Court Proceedings and Legal Action

The unrest at LPU has drawn serious judicial scrutiny. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking an independent probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Taking stern note of the public order breakdown and property damage, the court directed law enforcement agencies to submit comprehensive progress reports regarding the investigation, arrests, and security measures. Police officials reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of rioting or spread of false information, regardless of their institutional or political affiliation.

University Response and Current Campus Status

In the wake of the violent events, LPU administration announced a temporary 10-day suspension of regular offline classes and examinations to ensure safety and restore calm on campus. Pro-Chancellor Dr. Rashmi Mittal and MP Ashok Mittal issued official statements emphasizing that unverified claims were weaponized by external forces to malign the reputation of the institution. Heavy police forces, led by top officers, remain stationed at all university entry and exit gates. A flag march was conducted across the campus, and the administration has assured students and parents that comprehensive security protocols are now in place as normal academic routines resume.
