Punjab Revamps Electricity Billing: Monthly Bills to Replace Bi-Monthly Cycle

Date:

Punjab Introduces Monthly Electricity Billing

Punjab’s electricity distribution company Powercom has launched a major reform of the electricity billing cycle to benefit consumers by improving transparency and accuracy. Under the new arrangement, domestic consumers will receive electricity bills every month instead of the current once in two months system. This transition is part of a broader plan to modernize the state’s power sector by deploying smart meters across the region.

Smart Meters for Accurate Billing

Powercom has commenced the rollout of smart meters, replacing outdated mechanical meters across households and government institutions. The smart meter installation project is budgeted at approximately ₹21 crore and will not involve any extra charge to consumers. Once these meters are in place, real-time energy usage will be recorded and billing will reflect exact consumption, eliminating issues such as estimated bills and inaccurate readings seen with older meters.

Benefits of Monthly Billing

With the shift to monthly bills, customers will pay for actual monthly consumption rather than being billed after a two-month cycle. Earlier, consumers were billed based on consumption up to 600 units every two months. Under the new system, billing will be calculated on a monthly basis of up to 300 units, allowing better tracking of usage and enabling households to plan their energy expenditure more effectively.

Monthly billing will particularly help tenants and landlords by providing a transparent consumption record, reducing disputes between them. Households will also benefit from timely application of slab rates and subsidies, which will apply fairly each month rather than in bulk after two months.

Implementation and Consumer Support

Powercom teams have begun issuing notices to customers with old meters and are actively replacing them with smart meters. Officials say the rollout aims to complete across the state over the coming months. The move is expected to make the billing process more effective and trustworthy, while offering consumers a clearer picture of their electricity costs.
