Transport Workers Announce Protest Schedule
Employees of Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC have issued a strong warning to the Punjab government, announcing a series of protests and strikes if their long-pending demands are not addressed. Union leaders said they are prepared to intensify their agitation over issues such as employee arrests, privatization concerns, and job security.
The workers have outlined a protest calendar that includes demonstrations at all 27 bus depots across the state. They also announced a one-day strike and a three-day statewide shutdown later in May. If the government does not respond positively by the end of the month, the union has warned of an indefinite strike that could severely impact public transport services across Punjab.
Key Demands of the Employees
The employees are demanding the release of colleagues who were detained during previous protests. They are also opposing what they describe as the “systematic privatization” of Punjab’s public transport system.
One of the major concerns is the government’s kilometre scheme, under which private bus operators are hired to run services on government routes and are paid based on distance traveled. The union argues that this policy threatens the future of state-run bus services and could lead to reduced employment opportunities for existing workers.
In addition, the employees are demanding better job security, regularization of contractual staff, and protection of public transport infrastructure.
Impact on Passengers
If the strike goes ahead, thousands of passengers across Punjab may face significant inconvenience. Punjab Roadways and PRTC buses are heavily used by daily commuters, students, and women who benefit from free travel schemes.
A prolonged shutdown would force many people to rely on private transport, increasing travel costs and causing delays. Rural areas, where state-run buses are often the only affordable option, are expected to be affected the most.
Government Yet to Respond
As of now, the Punjab government has not announced any concrete solution to the workers’ concerns. Union leaders stated that they remain open to dialogue, but they are determined to continue their protest until meaningful action is taken.
The situation is being closely watched by commuters and transport officials, as any disruption in bus services could affect lakhs of passengers across the state.
