RCB Strengths and Weaknesses Ahead of IPL 2026: What to Expect from Virat Kohli’s Bengaluru

Date:

Strong Batting Line-up Led by Virat Kohli

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) enter the 2026 Indian Premier League season as one of the most talked-about teams. After winning their maiden IPL title in 2025, expectations from the franchise are higher than ever. The team still features experienced stars and explosive overseas players who can change the course of a match in a matter of overs.

At the top of the batting order, Virat Kohli remains the backbone of the team. His consistency and experience make him one of the most reliable openers in the tournament. Alongside him, England’s aggressive wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt is expected to provide fast starts during the powerplay. This opening pair is seen as a major strength because it combines stability with attacking intent.

The middle order also looks solid with players like Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, and power-hitters who can accelerate the scoring rate in the middle overs. If the top order fires consistently, RCB could post big totals throughout the tournament. Analysts believe that the team’s batting depth is one of the biggest reasons they remain strong contenders for the title.

Squad Continuity Gives RCB an Edge

Another important advantage for RCB this season is squad stability. Much of the core group that helped the team win the championship remains intact. In T20 leagues like the IPL, team chemistry and understanding of roles often play a huge role in success.

Players already know their responsibilities, which reduces the risk of early-season inconsistency. This continuity also allows the coaching staff to focus more on strategy rather than experimenting with combinations. Experts believe this stability could help RCB start the season strongly and maintain momentum throughout the tournament.

Pace Attack Has Experience but Raises Concerns

While the batting unit looks formidable, the bowling department presents mixed signals. RCB have experienced pacers who can deliver crucial breakthroughs, especially during the powerplay and death overs. However, injuries and fitness concerns among some fast bowlers remain a worry.

If key pacers miss matches due to injury, the team might struggle to maintain balance. Backup bowlers lack the same level of experience, which could expose the team in high-pressure situations. Bowling depth will therefore be a crucial factor in RCB’s campaign this year.

Lack of Spin Depth Could Be a Problem

One of the biggest tactical concerns for RCB heading into IPL 2026 is their relatively thin spin department. In Indian conditions, quality spin bowling often plays a decisive role, especially on slower pitches.

Compared to some rival teams, RCB do not have many wrist-spin options who can consistently trouble batters in the middle overs. If the pitch offers turn and their primary spinners fail to deliver, the team could find it difficult to control the run rate. This lack of variety in spin bowling has been highlighted as a potential weakness that could affect their title defense.

Overdependence on Star Players

Another concern is the heavy reliance on a few key players. While stars like Kohli and Salt can win matches single-handedly, too much dependence on them can create pressure on the rest of the lineup.

If the top order fails to deliver on a particular day, the middle order must step up quickly. Successful teams in the IPL often rely on collective contributions rather than individual brilliance. Therefore, RCB will need consistent performances from all players to remain competitive throughout the season.

What Fans Can Expect in IPL 2026

RCB start the season with confidence after finally lifting their first IPL trophy in 2025, ending a long wait for the franchise and its supporters.

With a powerful batting lineup and experienced core, the team certainly has the potential to challenge for the title again. However, their chances will depend on how well the bowling unit performs and whether the squad can overcome its tactical weaknesses.

If the bowlers deliver consistently and the batting unit maintains its form, RCB could once again be among the strongest contenders in IPL 2026.
