Rising Heat Increases the Risk of Diseases in Punjab

Date:

Heatwave Conditions Trigger Health Concerns

Punjab is witnessing intense heatwave conditions as temperatures continue to rise across several districts. Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, skin infections, respiratory problems, and several seasonal illnesses. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially during afternoon hours when temperatures are at their peak.

The increasing temperature has not only affected daily life but has also started impacting public health. Hospitals and health centers are seeing a rise in patients suffering from dizziness, fatigue, headaches, vomiting, and heat exhaustion. Children, elderly people, outdoor workers, and patients with existing health issues are considered the most vulnerable during this period.

Diseases Common During Extreme Heat

Medical experts say that excessive heat creates favorable conditions for many diseases. Cases of dehydration and heatstroke are increasing rapidly due to continuous exposure to sunlight and insufficient water intake. Doctors have also warned that stomach infections, food poisoning, diarrhea, and viral fever become more common during hot weather because food spoils quickly in high temperatures.

Respiratory diseases may also worsen due to rising pollution levels and dust in the atmosphere. People suffering from asthma and breathing disorders are advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. Skin allergies, rashes, and fungal infections are also being reported more frequently in hospitals during the summer season.

Health Department Issues Advisory

The Punjab Health Department has issued guidelines to protect citizens from heat-related illnesses. People have been advised to drink sufficient water, use ORS solutions, wear light-colored cotton clothes, and avoid stepping out during peak heat hours between 12 PM and 4 PM. Health officials have also encouraged people to consume fresh fruits and maintain proper hygiene.

Hospitals across Punjab have reportedly prepared special arrangements for heatstroke management. Medical facilities have stocked emergency medicines, cooling equipment, and hydration supplies to deal with rising cases of heat-related illnesses.

Farmers and Outdoor Workers Most Affected

The scorching heat has particularly affected farmers, laborers, traffic police personnel, and construction workers who spend long hours outdoors. Experts say continuous exposure to high temperatures without adequate rest and hydration may lead to serious health complications.

Agricultural activities in Punjab are also being impacted due to extreme weather conditions. Rising heat has increased electricity demand as people rely heavily on cooling appliances like air conditioners and coolers.

Experts Stress Preventive Measures

Health specialists believe prevention is the best way to avoid heat-related diseases. Citizens are advised to avoid consuming stale food, reduce intake of oily meals, and drink clean water regularly. Doctors also recommend including seasonal fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, and muskmelon in daily diets to maintain hydration levels.

Experts further warn that climate change is contributing to longer and more intense heatwaves across North India, including Punjab. Rising temperatures and warmer nights are increasing health risks and making heat-related illnesses more common every year.
