Second-Largest Ruby Ever Found: Massive 11,000-Carat Stone Discovered in Myanmar

Date:

Rare Ruby Discovery Shocks the Gemstone World

A gigantic ruby weighing nearly 11,000 carats has been discovered in Myanmar, making it the second-largest ruby ever found in the country. The massive gemstone, weighing around 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds), was unearthed in the Mogok region of Myanmar, an area globally famous for producing some of the finest rubies in the world.

According to reports from Myanmar state media, the ruby was discovered shortly after the country’s traditional New Year celebrations in April. Officials described the gemstone as “exceptionally large, rare, and difficult to find.” The discovery has attracted international attention due to both its enormous size and its remarkable color quality.

Why This Ruby Is So Valuable

Although Myanmar previously discovered a larger 21,450-carat ruby in 1996, experts believe the newly found gemstone may actually be more valuable because of its superior clarity, transparency, and rich purplish-red color. The stone reportedly has yellowish undertones and a highly reflective surface, making it extremely attractive to collectors and gemstone experts.

Myanmar’s Mogok Valley is often called the “Valley of Rubies” and is famous for producing rare “pigeon blood” rubies, considered among the most expensive gemstones in the world. High-quality rubies from the region can sell for millions of dollars in international markets.

Discovery in a Conflict-Torn Region

The ruby was found in the upper Mandalay region near Mogok, an area that has experienced intense conflict since Myanmar’s 2021 military coup. Despite the ongoing civil unrest, gemstone mining continues to play a major role in the country’s economy. Myanmar is believed to produce nearly 90% of the world’s rubies.

Myanmar’s military-backed government displayed the ruby publicly in Naypyidaw, where President Min Aung Hlaing was photographed inspecting the gemstone. However, international human rights organizations have long criticized Myanmar’s gemstone industry, arguing that profits from gem mining have helped finance armed conflict and military operations in the country.

Global Reactions and Online Buzz

The discovery quickly became a trending topic online, with gemstone enthusiasts discussing the ruby’s quality and potential value on social media platforms and Reddit. Some users praised its rare color and enormous size, while others debated whether the stone is suitable for cutting into jewelry or better preserved as a historic mineral specimen.

Experts believe the ruby could become one of the most famous gemstones ever discovered if properly authenticated and preserved. While officials have not released an estimated market value, many analysts believe the stone could be worth millions of dollars because of its rarity and quality.

Myanmar’s Historic Gemstone Legacy

Myanmar has a long history of gemstone mining dating back centuries. Emperors, kings, and traders once fought to control the Mogok Valley because of its rich gemstone reserves. Even today, Myanmar rubies remain highly prized in luxury jewelry markets across the world.

The discovery of this 11,000-carat ruby once again highlights Myanmar’s importance in the global gemstone industry and reminds the world of the hidden natural treasures buried beneath the country’s mountains.
