Stock Markets Decline Sharply As Sensex Falls Over 240 Points, Nifty Tests 22,800

Date:

Indian headline stock indices extended their losing streak on Tuesday as persistent geopolitical tension and volatile global cues continued to weigh down investor sentiment. The benchmark BSE Sensex tumbled over 240 points to settle at 72,529, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped more than 60 points to close at 22,716. Domestic equity markets faced sustained selling pressure throughout the session, heavily impacted by rising crude oil prices and continued outflows of foreign capital.

Elevated Crude Oil Prices and Geopolitical Concerns Spook Investors

Global crude oil prices remained elevated during trade on Tuesday, adding significant pressure to India’s energy-sensitive financial markets. The global benchmark Brent crude traded higher by 1.74 percent, hovering around $107.1 per barrel. Market analysts point out that heightened geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the ongoing US-Iran conflict continues to create friction in international energy supply chains. Although US President Donald Trump stated that the conflict could resolve soon, ongoing diplomatic communications through international mediators have yet to ease market anxiety regarding potential trade disruptions in the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Heavy FII Capital Outflows Put Pressure on Domestic Equities

Continued selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) has emerged as a major headwind for the domestic equity market. Data from national exchanges confirmed that foreign investors offloaded equities worth over ₹5,353 crore in a single trading session. This relentless institutional profit-booking has weakened market depth, triggering cautionary stances across retail and institutional trading desks alike.

Mixed Global and Asian Market Cues

The weak performance of the domestic indices closely mirrored broader trends seen across global financial markets. Major Asian benchmark indices traded predominantly lower, with South Korea’s KOSPI, Japan’s Nikkei 225, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng indices posting noticeable declines. Conversely, Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index managed minor gains. Over in the United States, Wall Street benchmarks also logged losses during the previous session, reflecting widespread global risk aversion.

Deep Losses in Previous Trading Session Keep Sentiment Cautious

Tuesday’s downward drift comes on the heels of severe market declines recorded earlier in the week. In the previous trading session, the Sensex had plummeted by more than 1,124 points to hit its lowest closing level in several months, while the Nifty slipped over 360 points. With domestic benchmark indices remaining under technical stress, analysts expect equity markets to stay volatile until crude oil prices stabilize and international diplomatic channels provide clarity on global trade routes.
