Vijay Hazare Trophy Opens with Unprecedented Records and High-Scoring Matches

Date:

The current season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy commenced on Wednesday, immediately making headlines with a series of unprecedented performances and shattered records. The opening day saw an extraordinary 22 players achieving centuries, marking the highest number of centuries recorded in a single day throughout the tournament’s history. This surpasses the previous record of 19 centuries, which occurred on December 12, 2021, and January 3, 2025. Additionally, the day featured a double century.

Notable Batting Achievements

Among the day’s highlights, Bihar’s match against Arunachal Pradesh became particularly notable. Three batsmen from Bihar — Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored 190; Sakibul Gani, with an unbeaten 124; and Ayush Loharuka, contributing 116 — each reached the century mark in a single innings. This marked a first for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Bihar also set a new record for the most sixes in any men’s List-A innings, hitting a total of 38.

Further individual batting records were established: Vaibhav Suryavanshi completed 150 runs in just 59 balls, setting a new fastest 150 in men’s List-A cricket, surpassing a record previously held by AB de Villiers. Sakibul Gani recorded a century in 32 balls, making it the fastest List-A century by an Indian player and the third fastest in men’s List-A cricket overall. Suryavanshi, at 14 years and 272 days old, also became the youngest player to score a century in men’s List-A cricket.

In another thrilling encounter, Karnataka successfully chased a target of 413 runs against Jharkhand, achieving the biggest run chase in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Elsewhere, Swastik Samal of Odisha registered an individual score of 212 runs, though his team ultimately lost the match.

Record-Breaking Team Totals and Fielding

Bihar’s performance against Arunachal Pradesh included a monumental team total of 574 runs for six wickets in 50 overs, setting a new record for the highest score in men’s List-A cricket. This is only the second instance of a team scoring over 500 runs in List-A cricket; the previous record of 505 runs was set by Tamil Nadu against the same Arunachal Pradesh team in 2022.

On the bowling front, Mibom Mosu of Arunachal Pradesh had a challenging day against Bihar, conceding 116 runs in 9 overs, which stands as the most runs given away by a bowler in a men’s List-A cricket match. Two other bowlers from his team also gave away more than 90 runs.

In fielding, Vignesh Puthur of Kerala made history by taking six catches against Tripura, including one off his own bowling. This makes him the first player in men’s List-A cricket to achieve six catches in a single match.
