Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Addresses Parliament on E20 Petrol

In a formal written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari addressed growing public concerns regarding the impact of E20 petrol on older automobiles. With ethanol-blended petrol (20% ethanol blended with 80% petrol) now becoming widely available across fuel stations nationwide, vehicle owners have voiced apprehensions about potential engine degradation, reduced mileage, and component wear.

Gadkari clarified that extensive scientific evaluations and laboratory trials show no major adverse impact on overall vehicle performance. However, he acknowledged that certain legacy vehicles might require routine component replacements over time, reassuring vehicle owners that no major engine modifications are necessary.

Impact on Legacy BS3 Vehicles and Fuel System Components

The Minister disclosed that comprehensive joint studies conducted by top research institutions—including the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)—highlighted specific material vulnerabilities in older models.

According to the testing findings, vehicles manufactured under BS-III emission standards (introduced from April 1, 2005, and produced prior to 2016) may experience accelerated wear on certain rubber components. Because ethanol exhibits higher solvent reactivity and moisture absorption compared to standard petrol, rubber parts such as fuel hoses, O-rings, seals, fuel line gaskets, and internal rubber fittings in fuel pumps can degrade faster over prolonged exposure.

Gadkari reassured vehicle owners that these rubber parts and gaskets can be easily replaced during routine scheduled servicing without requiring complex engine overhauls or expensive structural modifications.

Engine Compatibility and Vehicle Performance Analysis

Addressing fears surrounding major engine damage or sudden mechanical breakdowns, the Minister reiterated that no abnormal wear and tear was observed in metal or plastic components during rigorous field testing.

Parameters such as drivability, engine startability, structural metal compatibility, and plastic resilience remained fully stable across legacy two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Furthermore, testing confirmed that BS-VI compliant vehicles (manufactured post-2020) and newer E20-ready vehicles continue to meet all mandatory emission and performance standards without any issues. SIAM has also confirmed that no widespread engine failures or breakdowns attributable to E20 fuel have been reported across the country.

The Mileage Debate: Factors Beyond Ethanol Blending

On the subject of fuel efficiency and dropping mileage reported by some vehicle owners, the Road Transport Ministry cited inputs from automobile manufacturers and testing agencies. The government emphasized that vehicle fuel economy is governed by multiple operational variables beyond the fuel blend itself.

Factors such as individual driving habits, timely vehicle maintenance, regular replacement of air and oil filters, optimal tire pressure, proper wheel alignment, and air conditioner usage play a significant role in determining fuel economy. While ethanol inherently carries lower energy density than unblended petrol, the overall performance of properly maintained legacy cars remains well within expected operational parameters.
