Punjab Election Results 2025 Live Counting Underway for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samitis

Date:

The political landscape of Punjab is buzzing today as the counting of votes for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections begins across the state. These elections, seen as a litmus test for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition parties including Congress, SAD, and BJP, will determine the leadership at the grassroots level in rural Punjab.

The Polling Statistics The elections were held on December 14 across 22 Zila Parishads and 153 Panchayat Samitis. According to the State Election Commission, a voter turnout of approximately 48% was recorded. While the turnout was lower than in previous years, the high-stakes nature of the contest has kept the state on edge. Over 1.36 crore voters were eligible to cast their ballots at more than 19,000 polling stations.

Key Contests and Candidates More than 9,000 candidates are in the fray for 347 Zila Parishad zones and 2,838 Panchayat Samiti zones. The ruling AAP is looking to consolidate its hold over rural pockets, while the Congress, led by Partap Singh Bajwa, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have accused the government of administrative high-handedness and rigging during the polling process.

Security and Counting Process The Punjab Police has deployed over 44,000 personnel to ensure a peaceful counting process. Counting centers have been established at block and district headquarters. To maintain transparency, the State Election Commission has appointed senior IAS and PCS officers as observers. Results for the Panchayat Samiti zones are expected to arrive by midday, while the Zila Parishad results may take until late evening due to the ballot paper system.

Political Implications These results are crucial as they come ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections. A victory for AAP would signify continued trust in the Bhagwant Mann government, whereas a strong showing by the opposition would signal a shift in the rural voter sentiment regarding issues like agrarian distress and law and order.
