India-New Zealand FTA PM Modi and PM Christopher Luxon Discuss Strategic Trade Ties

Date:

A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a productive telephonic conversation with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to review the progress of bilateral relations. The discussion marks a significant step forward in strengthening the bond between the two nations, which share a common vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the growing momentum in high-level engagements and the diversification of cooperation across various sectors.

Accelerating the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) The centerpiece of the conversation was the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand. While New Zealand has long been keen on gaining better access to the Indian market for its dairy and agricultural products, India is looking for a balanced deal that protects its domestic farmers while gaining better access for its IT professionals and service sector. The leaders agreed to fast-track discussions between trade officials to resolve pending issues and create a win-win situation for both economies.

Cooperation in Defense and Technology Beyond trade, PM Modi and PM Luxon explored opportunities in the defense and security domains. Given the strategic importance of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, both nations are looking to enhance cooperation in maritime domain awareness and defense technology. Furthermore, technology partnerships—particularly in digital public infrastructure, green energy, and sustainable agriculture—were highlighted as key pillars for future growth.

The Strength of the Indian Diaspora PM Modi thanked Prime Minister Luxon for the care and support provided to the Indian community in New Zealand. With over 250,000 people of Indian origin residing in New Zealand, the diaspora acts as a vital “living bridge” between the two cultures. The leaders discussed enhancing student exchange programs and streamlining visa processes to facilitate easier travel for professionals and tourists, which would further boost the tourism sectors of both countries.

Regional and Global Issues The call also touched upon global challenges, including climate change and supply chain resilience. PM Modi invited New Zealand to join more initiatives led by India on the global stage, such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA). The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together at multilateral forums like the United Nations and the Commonwealth to promote a rules-based international order.
