Kerosene Supply Stopped in 2012
A major development has emerged for ration card and blue card holders in Punjab. After a gap of nearly 14 years, the Central Government has decided to restore the kerosene oil quota for ration card beneficiaries across the state. The move is expected to provide relief to millions of families who depend on subsidized fuel for daily cooking and lighting needs.
The kerosene supply was discontinued in 2012 when the then state government suggested that households had access to LPG cylinders, making kerosene unnecessary. Following that recommendation, the Central Government halted the supply of kerosene oil to more than 22,000 fair price shops operating in Punjab.

LPG Crisis Leads to New Decision
The decision to reintroduce kerosene has been taken amid growing concerns about LPG availability and supply disruptions in several areas. Rising geopolitical tensions and international conflicts have affected fuel supply chains, which has also contributed to a shortage of domestic and commercial gas cylinders.
In response to the situation, the Central Government has reportedly approved the restoration of kerosene distribution to ration card holders. Officials believe this step will help ease the burden on families facing difficulty in accessing cooking gas.
Relief for Millions of Beneficiaries
According to representatives of the fair price dealer associations, the new decision could benefit a massive number of people in Punjab. Around 38 lakh families linked with welfare schemes are expected to receive kerosene oil again through ration depots.
These beneficiaries collectively represent approximately 1.57 crore individuals across the state. The restoration of kerosene distribution is therefore seen as a major welfare measure aimed at supporting economically weaker sections.
Expected Distribution Plan
If implemented as expected, ration card holders may receive kerosene oil through the public distribution system every three months. Each member listed on the ration card could be entitled to around 5 liters of kerosene oil per quarter.
This allocation could help families meet basic household energy needs during periods when LPG cylinders are unavailable or too expensive.
Impact on Ration Depot Holders
The decision is also expected to bring relief to thousands of ration depot operators across Punjab. With kerosene distribution resuming, these depots may see increased activity and improved service delivery for beneficiaries.
Dealer associations have welcomed the move and believe it will help strengthen the public distribution system. They also hope that the government will soon issue detailed guidelines regarding allocation, pricing, and supply schedules.
