Punjab Government Declares Holiday on Friday; Schools, Colleges and Offices to Remain Closed

Date:

Punjab Government Announces Public Holiday

The Punjab government has announced a public holiday on Friday across the state. According to official information, all government offices, schools, colleges and many educational institutions will remain closed on that day.

The decision has been taken to mark the Shaheedi Diwas (martyrdom day) of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, an important occasion in Sikh history. The state government issues holidays on such significant religious and historical events to allow people to participate in prayers and commemorative programs.

Officials said the holiday will be observed across Punjab, and all government departments, boards and corporations will remain shut for the day.

Educational Institutions to Remain Closed

The holiday announcement has brought relief and excitement for students across the state. All government schools, private schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed on Friday.

Authorities have also directed educational institutions to strictly follow the holiday order issued by the state government. Students and teachers are expected to resume normal classes the following working day.

Such holidays are part of the official state calendar which lists public holidays for government institutions each year.

Significance of Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the fifth Sikh Guru and played a crucial role in the development of Sikhism. He compiled the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and contributed greatly to the spiritual and social growth of the Sikh community.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji attained martyrdom in 1606 in Lahore after refusing to renounce his faith. His sacrifice is remembered every year with great reverence by Sikhs across the world.

On this day, devotees organize kirtan programs, community prayers, langar (community kitchen) and religious gatherings in gurdwaras across Punjab and other regions.

Government Holidays in Punjab

The Punjab government releases an annual holiday calendar listing gazetted and restricted holidays for government employees and institutions. These holidays are observed in government offices, boards, corporations and educational institutions under the state administration.

Public holidays are usually declared on major religious festivals, national events and important historical anniversaries. During these days, government offices remain closed while essential services continue to function.

Advisory for Citizens

Authorities have advised citizens to plan their official work accordingly as government offices will remain closed during the holiday. Banking and essential services may operate depending on their internal schedules.

Meanwhile, religious events and commemorations are expected to take place at major gurdwaras across the state as people gather to pay tribute to the legacy of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
