Assam Elections Row: Himanta Biswa Sarma Alleges ‘Pakistani Link’ in Congress Press Material

Date:

Political Controversy Intensifies Ahead of Assam Elections

A fresh political controversy has erupted ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam after the state’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, accused leaders of the Indian National Congress of using material allegedly linked to Pakistani sources during their press conferences.

The allegations came after Congress leaders held press briefings criticizing the BJP-led government in Assam. Sarma claimed that the documents and information presented during those briefings had suspicious origins and were connected to a Pakistani social media group. The accusation has added fuel to an already heated political atmosphere ahead of the state polls.

Allegations Against Congress Leaders

During a press conference in Guwahati, the Chief Minister specifically named Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi. According to Sarma, both leaders held separate press briefings—one in Delhi and another in Guwahati—where they used documents and information to question the BJP government.

Sarma alleged that a detailed examination of the material revealed that it had been sourced from a Pakistani social media group. He further claimed that this indicated attempts to influence public perception in Assam during the election period.

The Chief Minister described the information used in the press conferences as misleading and politically motivated.

Claims of Rising Interest from Pakistan

Sarma also claimed that Pakistan-based media outlets had shown unusual interest in the Assam elections. According to him, several talk shows in Pakistan have recently discussed the upcoming polls in the northeastern state.

He stated that at least eleven such discussions were aired on Pakistani television channels within a short period, with many of them predicting or supporting a Congress victory. The Chief Minister suggested that such developments raised serious concerns about external narratives influencing domestic political debates.

Congress Responds to Allegations

Leaders of the Congress party have strongly rejected Sarma’s claims and termed them politically motivated. Party leaders argue that the BJP government is attempting to divert attention from key public issues by making sensational allegations.

They maintain that the documents used in their press conferences were part of legitimate political criticism and that there is no foreign involvement. Congress leaders also said that such accusations were intended to create controversy ahead of the elections.

Political Tensions Rise Before Polls

The political rivalry between the BJP and Congress has intensified as the state moves closer to the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election. The election will decide the leadership of the state for the next five years and is expected to witness a fierce contest between the two major parties.

With accusations and counter-accusations dominating headlines, the campaign season in Assam is becoming increasingly confrontational. Political analysts believe such controversies are likely to continue as parties attempt to influence voters.

For now, the debate over the alleged Pakistani links has become one of the most talked-about political issues in the state, further heating up the election narrative.
