Russia to Deliver New S-400 Air Defence System to India by May

Date:

India to Receive Fourth S-400 System Soon

India is set to receive the fourth unit of the advanced S-400 air defence missile system from Russia by early May, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s aerial defence network. Reports indicate that the system has already been shipped and is expected to arrive at an Indian port within weeks.

This delivery is part of the $5.43 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2018 for five S-400 squadrons. While three units have already been inducted into service, the fourth will further enhance India’s defence preparedness against aerial threats.

Deployment Likely in Strategic Region

According to defence sources, the incoming S-400 system is likely to be deployed in a strategically sensitive region, possibly in Rajasthan, to bolster air defence along India’s western border.

The system underwent pre-dispatch inspections by the Indian Air Force before being cleared for shipment. Once operational, it will significantly improve surveillance and interception capabilities.

Boost to India’s Air Defence Capabilities

The S-400 Triumf system is considered one of the most advanced long-range air defence systems in the world. It can track and neutralize multiple aerial threats, including fighter jets, drones, and ballistic missiles, at long distances.

Its induction strengthens India’s multi-layered air defence architecture, especially amid evolving regional security challenges. Experts believe that the addition of the fourth system will improve response time and defensive coverage.

Delays Due to Global Factors

The delivery of S-400 systems had faced delays due to logistical and production challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to completing all deliveries by 2026 under the existing agreement.

Future Deliveries and Defence Cooperation

The fifth and final S-400 system is expected to be delivered later, completing the contract. India is also exploring options for additional missile procurements and enhanced defence cooperation with Russia to strengthen its military capabilities further.
