Ex-SriLankan Airlines CEO Found Dead Days After Bail In Corruption Case

Date:

Former SriLankan Airlines Chief Found Dead At Home

Former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena was found dead at his residence in Colombo just days after he secured bail in a high-profile corruption investigation linked to aircraft procurement deals. Sri Lankan police confirmed that the death occurred under suspicious circumstances and investigations are currently underway.

According to reports, Chandrasena had recently been released on bail after being remanded in connection with allegations surrounding Airbus aircraft purchases made during his tenure at SriLankan Airlines. Authorities stated that his body was discovered at his home on Friday morning. Initial police reports indicated that the death may have been caused by hanging, though a final post-mortem examination is awaited.

Corruption Case Linked To Airbus Aircraft Deal

The corruption investigation revolves around allegations that large bribes were paid during the procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines. Prosecutors alleged that Kapila Chandrasena received kickbacks connected to the purchase of several aircraft between 2011 and 2015, when he served as CEO of the national airline.

Court proceedings earlier this week reportedly revealed claims that money was distributed to influential political figures in Sri Lanka. Chandrasena allegedly admitted to transferring large sums during the administration of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. However, his legal team later argued that his statements had been obtained under pressure and should not be considered voluntary.

The anti-corruption investigation gained renewed attention after Sri Lanka introduced stronger anti-graft laws in 2024. The current government had promised tougher action against corruption and financial misconduct involving public officials and state institutions.

Arrest Warrant Issued Before Death

A major development in the case emerged shortly before Chandrasena’s death when a Colombo court reportedly issued an arrest warrant against him over alleged violations of bail conditions. This added further controversy to an already sensitive case that has attracted both political and international attention.

Authorities had accused Chandrasena and his wife of receiving illegal financial benefits connected to Airbus deals worth millions of dollars. The couple had earlier been arrested in 2019 but were later released on bail while legal proceedings continued.

Political Impact And Public Reaction

The sudden death of the former airline chief has sparked widespread discussion across Sri Lanka. Opposition leaders and political observers are demanding a transparent investigation to determine whether foul play was involved. Social media users have also questioned the timing of the incident, especially after recent court developments.

The Airbus bribery controversy has remained one of Sri Lanka’s most significant corruption scandals in recent years. The case not only affected the reputation of the national airline but also raised concerns about accountability in state-owned institutions.

Police officials have stated that further forensic investigations are ongoing and additional details will be released after official examinations are completed.
