Hantavirus vs COVID-19: Understanding the Key Differences

Date:

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a rare but serious viral infection mainly spread through contact with infected rodents, especially their urine, saliva, and droppings. The virus can cause severe respiratory illness and, in some cases, kidney-related complications. Recent international reports about hantavirus cases on a cruise ship have raised concerns among the public, with many comparing it to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, health experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) have clarified that hantavirus behaves very differently from COVID-19 and is far less likely to cause a global pandemic.

How Hantavirus Spreads

Unlike COVID-19, which spreads rapidly through airborne droplets and close human contact, hantavirus is primarily transmitted through infected rodents. People can become infected by inhaling contaminated dust particles or touching surfaces contaminated with rodent waste.

Experts say that human-to-human transmission is extremely rare and has only been linked to a specific strain called the Andes virus found in South America. Even then, transmission requires prolonged close contact.

Symptoms of Hantavirus

The early symptoms of hantavirus may resemble flu-like illness. Common signs include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting

In severe cases, patients may develop breathing difficulties due to fluid buildup in the lungs, known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). Health experts warn that the disease can become serious quickly if not treated early.

How It Differs from COVID-19

COVID-19 became a global pandemic because it spreads very easily between people, including from individuals who show no symptoms. Hantavirus, on the other hand, spreads mainly through rodents and is not considered highly contagious among humans.

Medical experts have also noted that while hantavirus can have a higher fatality rate in severe cases, its limited transmission reduces the risk of large-scale outbreaks. WHO officials recently stated that hantavirus is “not COVID or influenza” because its transmission pattern is completely different.

Is India at Risk?

Indian health authorities have stated that there is currently no immediate public health threat in India related to hantavirus. Officials from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed that recent reported cases were isolated and linked to a cruise ship environment rather than community spread.

Experts continue to advise people to maintain proper hygiene and avoid exposure to rodents in homes, farms, and storage areas.

Prevention Measures

Doctors recommend several preventive steps to reduce the risk of hantavirus infection:

  • Keep homes and surroundings free from rodents
  • Store food safely
  • Wear gloves and masks while cleaning rodent-infested areas
  • Avoid direct contact with rodent waste
  • Maintain proper sanitation and ventilation

Public health experts stress that awareness and cleanliness remain the best defense against the virus.
