Accused Escapes from Police Custody at Civil Hospital
A major security lapse came to light in Ludhiana after an alleged interstate arms smuggler managed to escape from police custody during a routine medical examination at the Civil Hospital. The incident created panic among law enforcement officials and raised serious questions regarding security arrangements while transporting high-risk suspects. According to police sources, the accused, identified as Vipin Kumar, was among the suspects arrested in connection with an interstate arms trafficking case involving sophisticated weapons and a vehicle carrying a fake registration plate.
Police Had Brought Accused for Mandatory Medical Checkup
As per standard legal procedures, the accused were brought to Ludhiana Civil Hospital before being produced in court for remand. A police team consisting of investigating officers, a senior constable, and a Punjab Home Guard personnel escorted the accused under security arrangements. Medical tests and documentation were being carried out inside the hospital when the incident occurred.
Escape Planned During Sample Collection
Police officials stated that the accused was taken near the hospital laboratory for medical testing. During the process, hospital staff requested the police personnel to temporarily remove the handcuffs so that medical samples could be collected. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly executed a pre-planned escape. As soon as the handcuffs were removed, he forcefully pushed the accompanying constable, causing a momentary loss of control.
Crowded Hospital Helped the Accused Flee
The accused reportedly used the heavy crowd present in the OPD section and hospital corridors to his advantage. Within seconds, he disappeared into the gathering of patients, attendants, and visitors. Before police officers could react effectively, he managed to run out of the hospital premises and evade immediate capture. Witnesses described the situation as chaotic, with police personnel rushing through different sections of the hospital in an attempt to locate the suspect.
Massive Search Operation Launched
Following the escape, senior police officials were immediately informed. Emergency alerts were issued across the city, and teams from various police units were deployed. Security checkpoints were strengthened at major entry and exit points, bus stands, railway stations, and other strategic locations. Authorities launched an extensive search operation to track down the fugitive and prevent him from leaving the city.
Fresh FIR Registered Against the Accused
Police have registered an additional case against Vipin Kumar for escaping from lawful custody and obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official duties. Officials confirmed that legal action would continue alongside efforts to rearrest the accused. Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Apart from the manhunt, authorities have initiated an internal inquiry to determine whether negligence or procedural lapses contributed to the escape.
