Air India to Discontinue Laundry Services for Flight Crew on International Layovers from July 1

Date:

A Strategic Move to Rein in Operational Costs

In a significant shift away from traditional employee perks, Tata Group-owned Air India has announced that it will no longer provide routine laundry services for its pilots and cabin crew during international layovers. The new directive is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026. This decision comes as the airline group aggressively reviews its corporate expenditures in the wake of reporting financial losses running into thousands of crores during the last fiscal year.

The Internal Communication and Necessary Adjustments

The sudden policy alteration was communicated to the airline staff via an internal email. Management acknowledged that the elimination of this perk marks a substantial departure from long-standing practices and legacy agreements. “We acknowledge that this represents a change from a long-standing arrangement during international layovers and understand this may require some adjustment,” the airline stated in its official internal note. Crew members have been advised to mentally prepare and pack efficiently for their upcoming international roster schedules.

Iron and Board to Replace Premium Hotel Services

Under the newly revised guidelines, flight crew members will no longer be able to charge dry cleaning or washing services to the airline’s account at overseas transit hotels. Instead, Air India has mandated that an iron and an ironing board will be systematically provided in each crew member’s hotel room during overseas layovers. To help smooth over the transition, the carrier has instructed employees who anticipate needing extra uniform sets to formally submit their requirements through a dedicated company portal so they can plan accordingly.

Key Exemptions to the New Policy Rule

While the sweeping austerity drive targets routine international flights, Air India has designated specific scenarios where the laundry facility will remain fully intact. According to internal sources, laundry services will continue to be provided without change during unexpected flight diversions and for crew members traveling on international stations for flight simulator or classroom training-related duties. Additionally, the premium laundry facility remains completely unaffected for all domestic layovers within India.

Compliance with Global Aviation Standards

Defending the cost-cutting measure, Air India sources noted that pilots and cabin crew are standardly issued four complete sets of uniforms. The management believes this inventory is entirely sufficient to maintain proper professional presentation during international trips while allowing adequate time for regular cleaning rotation. Air India management claims this step aligns perfectly with policies followed by major global carriers, where uniform maintenance during brief outstations is treated as a routine expense already covered under daily per-diem allowances.

Mixed Reactions and Backlash from Air Staff

The decision has predictably met with a cold reception from the airline’s flying staff. While many are frustrated by what they perceive as a gradual erosion of crew comfort and benefits, some employees have turned to dark humor to cope with the announcement. Several crew members jokingly remarked that their standard luggage checklist might now have to include a plastic bucket, washing detergent, and a portable clothesline just to keep their crisp uniforms presentable between demanding international long-haul flights.
