Ruckus in Home Affairs Panel Meet as Opposition Demands Debate on Pellet Guns and Jantar Mantar Lathi Charge

Date:

High-Voltage Drama in Parliamentary Standing Committee

Tensions flared up during a crucial meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs in New Delhi as Opposition members created an uproar over key security and law-and-order concerns. The panel, which gathers senior lawmakers across party lines to deliberate on national security policies, witnessed high-voltage drama after Opposition MPs persistently demanded an immediate debate on controversial policing measures and recent enforcement actions.

According to key sources, the meeting quickly turned chaotic when Opposition members raised serious objections regarding law enforcement tactics, urging the committee to step outside its scheduled topic list to address pressing public controversies.

Opposition Demands Discussion on Pellet Guns and Police Action

During the proceedings, Opposition members strongly insisted on adding two major issues to the agenda:

  • Use of Pellet Guns: Lawmakers sought a detailed review and debate on the continued deployment of pellet guns by security forces during crowd control operations.

  • Jantar Mantar Lathi Charge: Opposition MPs raised allegations regarding the high-handedness of the Delhi Police during recent protest demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, demanding accountability and an explanation for the alleged lathi charge on peaceful protesters.

The Opposition argued that both matters directly fall under national security and law enforcement ethics, making them critical subjects for discussion within the Home Affairs panel.

Committee Chairman Rejects Demand Citing Fixed Agenda

The situation escalated when Committee Chairman and senior BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agarwal firmly turned down the Opposition’s request. The Chairman clarified that committee meetings are strictly governed by parliamentary protocol and pre-approved schedules.

Sources reported that the Chairman stated the meeting would remain limited strictly to the issues previously listed on the formal agenda distributed to all members. Despite repeated disruptions and vocal demands from Opposition MPs seeking a formal debate, the Chairman refused to allow any unannounced or out-of-agenda discussions during the session.

Political Fallout and Ongoing Tensions

The deadlock inside the committee room reflects the broader ongoing friction between the treasury benches and the Opposition over police administration, civil liberties, and parliamentary procedure. While Opposition parties accuse the administration of evading crucial security discussions, government representatives maintain that parliamentary panels must function within established institutional guidelines rather than being derailed by politicking.
