Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces Major Perks for MLAs: Official Cars, Monthly Allowances, and Rs 25 Lakh Health Cover

New Welfare Package Announced for Tamil Nadu Legislators

In a significant administrative decision, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced a comprehensive support package for all 234 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the state Assembly. The newly unveiled measures aim to provide seamless mobility, logistical assistance, and enhanced welfare benefits to lawmakers, allowing them to engage with their constituents and carry out public duties without operational constraints.

Government Vehicles and ₹75,000 Monthly Allowance for Travel

Under the new initiative, every MLA across party lines will be provided with an official government vehicle to facilitate regular travel throughout their respective constituencies. To cover the ongoing operational cost of these vehicles, the state government will grant a monthly allowance of ₹75,000 to each legislator. This amount is designated to cover expenses related to fuel, routine vehicle maintenance, and driver salaries.

The proposal gained momentum in the Assembly after VCK MLA L.E. Jothimani highlighted the logistical difficulties faced by lawmakers—especially first-time legislators—when traveling to remote areas within their constituencies. Chief Minister Vijay acknowledged that many newly elected representatives come from modest economic backgrounds and require adequate transportation support to fulfill their public duties efficiently.

Office Secretarial Grant and Substantial Health Insurance Boost

In addition to mobility support, the government has introduced a secretarial grant of ₹25,000 per month for every MLA. This financial assistance will enable legislators to hire dedicated secretarial staff to handle constituent queries, official paperwork, and administrative responsibilities.

Furthermore, the state has announced a fivefold expansion of medical coverage for elected representatives. The maximum annual limit under the health insurance scheme for MLAs has been raised from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, offering financial security against major medical emergencies.

Mixed Political Responses and Broader Welfare Announcements

The package received positive feedback from several lawmakers, including Congress MLA Tharagai Cuthbert, who noted that the initiative would aid legislators across party lines. School Education Minister Raj Mohan also praised the decision, highlighting that funding for secretarial and driver allowances would generate local employment opportunities. Conversely, the DMK opposition expressed reservations, questioning the additional financial outlay on the state treasury.

Alongside benefits for lawmakers, the Chief Minister announced major healthcare infrastructure initiatives, including ₹351 crore to expand capacity in government medical colleges and a ₹300 crore project to establish a 400-bed multi-speciality hospital in Perambalur.
