Ravi River Water Levels Rise sharply: Flood Alert Issued Across Border Districts of Punjab

Date:

Rising Water Discharge Causes Panic in Border Villages

Heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh and upper catchment areas has triggered a sudden surge in the water levels of the Ravi River. The sudden inflow has triggered immediate safety concerns across low-lying border areas in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, and Amritsar districts. local authorities have issued advisories instructing residents to remain alert and avoid venturing near the riverbanks.

Water Inflow and Dam Operations Monitor

Due to intense precipitation in the hills, water discharge from Ranjit Sagar Dam (Thien Dam) and Ujh River has registered a sharp increase. Control rooms set up by the Irrigation Department are continuously monitoring the water levels at Madhopur Headworks. Officials confirmed that excess water is being regulated through gates, but elevated water levels could inundate agricultural fields along the riverbed.

District Administration on High Alert and Emergency Preparedness

To handle potential emergency situations, district administrations in border districts have activated disaster relief teams. Emergency response personnel, boats, and sandbags have been deployed at key strategic vulnerable locations. Block Development Officers and Panchayat Secretaries have been directed to stay stationed in their respective jurisdictions to assist villagers in case of sudden flooding.

Farmers Express Concerns Over Crop Damage

The rising water level has caused immense worry among local farmers whose agricultural lands lie close to the river catchment areas. Paddy crops and seasonal vegetables are at risk of being submerged if the discharge continues to rise. Farmers have urged the state government to strengthen bunds and embankments to prevent river erosion and minimize agricultural losses.

Safety Guidelines and Advisory for Local Residents

The local police and civil administration have urged residents living along the Ravi basin to take necessary precautions. People are strictly advised against crossing swollen streams or leading livestock near the water line. Villagers have been instructed to contact emergency helpline numbers established at district administrative centers in case of any urgent rescue requirement.
