ITIA Imposes Provisional Suspension Following Doping Control Violation

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for a banned substance. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the sanction on Wednesday, stating that the Australian player failed an in-competition doping control test conducted during an ATP 250 event in Mallorca, Spain, on June 22, 2026.

Subsequent laboratory testing conducted by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited facility confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, which is the primary metabolite of cocaine. As a result of the provisional suspension, the 31-year-old tennis star is prohibited from competing in, attending, or participating in any sanctioned ATP or ITF professional events pending the final outcome of an independent tribunal hearing.

Kyrgios Accepts Full Responsibility and Reflects on Recent Struggles

Addressing the situation publicly via his official social media channels, Kyrgios admitted to the anti-doping violation and expressed deep regret over the incident. He chose to address his supporters directly, acknowledging that he had made a significant error in judgment and taking full personal responsibility for his actions without making excuses.

In his statement, Kyrgios conveyed his heartfelt apologies to his fans, family members, corporate sponsors, and young followers who look up to him as a role model. Reflecting on the factors contributing to his mental state, he noted that lingering physical injuries over recent years had created tremendous emotional and physical strain. He expressed that coming to terms with the potential end of his professional tennis career had proved far more difficult than anticipated, leading to feelings of isolation and helplessness.

Stepping Away from Public Life and Path Forward

Acknowledging that his ongoing physical setbacks do not excuse the rule violation, Kyrgios emphasized that the test result serves as an immediate wake-up call for his life and career. He announced a decision to step back from social media platforms and public appearances for 28 days to focus on his personal wellbeing, mental health, and rehabilitation.

During this period of reflection, the Australian athlete requested privacy for himself and his family as he prepares to navigate the upcoming legal and disciplinary proceedings with the integrity agency. Kyrgios concluded his message by reaffirming his intention to undergo necessary personal work and return to professional tennis stronger.
