Indian equity benchmark indices gave up their early intraday gains on Monday, finishing lower as profit-taking emerged at higher valuation levels. Heavyweights in the banking and financial sectors led the downside pressure, reversing the initial positive momentum seen during the morning session. Investors maintained a cautious stance amidst global uncertainties, geopolitical developments in the Middle East, and fluctuating crude oil prices.
Profit-Booking Weighs on Indian Benchmarks
The BSE Sensex ended the trading session down by more than 150 points, testing the 77,370 level. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty50 dropped by 33 points to settle at 24,219. The market remained stuck in a narrow range for most of the afternoon trade as traders chose to lock in short-term profits near key resistance marks. Although selective buying interest provided a cushion in technology stocks, it was not enough to offset the broader market decline driven by index heavyweights.
Banking and Financial Stocks Lead the Drag
The financial landscape experienced significant selling pressure, with both private sector and public sector (PSU) lenders falling victim to profit-taking. Major constituent stocks dragging down the Nifty 50 included Reliance Industries, State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finance. The sub-indices for financial services and PSU banking saw persistent pressure throughout the trading hours, underscoring the shift in trader sentiment away from financial counters.
IT Stocks Provide Respite Amid Weak Sentiment
Bucking the overall pessimistic trend, the technology sector displayed remarkable resilience. The Nifty IT index witnessed renewed buying interest after recent consolidation phases. Investors appeared keen on accumulating select tech counters at lower levels. Additionally, real estate stocks remained in focus as market participants evaluated interest rate expectations and underlying sector demand. Meanwhile, mid-cap and small-cap indices exhibited selective strength, shielding retail portfolios from severe damage.
Crude Oil Prices and US Sanctions Keep Investors Cautious
Global macroeconomic factors continued to influence local sentiment. Market participants closely monitored crude oil trends alongside potential US economic sanctions against Iran. Even though oil prices dipped slightly in early Asian trading, Brent crude stayed near $93 per barrel, sustaining fears surrounding elevated energy costs and domestic inflation. Anticipation regarding formal policy statements from the US Treasury Department further capped aggressive long positions in emerging markets like India.
Institutional Flow Analysis and Technical Key Levels
Institutional flows reflected a divergent trend. Latest market data revealed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, unloading equities worth Rs 542.71 crore. On the other hand, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) acted as key absorbers of foreign selling, buying equities worth Rs 2,124.14 crore. From a technical standpoint, market analysts identify 24,000 as a vital support zone for the Nifty 50, with resistance anchored between 24,300 and 24,400. For the Bank Nifty, 57,000 serves as primary support, while 58,000 stands as the hurdle to clear for any prospective upside rally.
