Indonesia’s infamous Anak Krakatau volcano erupted with immense power once again, hurling massive clouds of ash and hot volcanic material high into the atmosphere. According to updates from Indonesia’s meteorological agency (BMKG) and the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, satellite monitoring identified giant plumes soaring to extraordinary heights. While lower ash layers drifted northeast over West Java and Jakarta at altitudes around 20,000 feet, higher plumes shot up to 50,000 feet (approximately 15,000 meters). Driven by shifting atmospheric winds, the thick grey clouds spread over Banten and Lampung provinces, covering roads, vehicles, and buildings in fine layer of grey dust.
Daily Life Impacted: Schools Move Online
The footprint of the eruption rapidly extended to daily civilian routines beyond aviation disruptions. In the capital city of Jakarta and neighbouring provinces, education authorities ordered schools to transition to online learning to protect children from inhaling hazardous airborne particles. Health officials advised residents in affected regions to wear protective masks outdoors. Maritime traffic in the busy Sunda Strait was also instructed to exercise extreme caution, with ships strictly forbidden from approaching within a 3-kilometer exclusion radius around the volatile volcanic crater.

However, experts emphasized that the probability of further eruptions remains exceptionally high due to continuous magma movement beneath the Earth’s crust. Anak Krakatau, which translates to “Child of Krakatoa,” formed in the caldera of the legendary 1883 Krakatoa eruption—one of the most destructive natural disasters in human history.
