Washington, September 19, 2026: US President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico will be barred from the White House, escalating his ongoing dispute with major American news organisations.
Trump made the announcement on Friday through a post on Truth Social, accusing the three outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as false and misleading coverage of his administration.
Trump said the restrictions would take effect immediately and indicated that other media organisations could face similar action.
Trump Accuses Outlets of Negative Coverage
In his statement, Trump accused CNN, MS NOW and Politico of reporting what he called “fiction and lies” about the US President, his administration and the United States.

CNN rejected the move and said it stood behind its White House reporting team, describing its journalism as fair and accurate.
Politico also said it would continue reporting on the White House and would defend its First Amendment rights against restrictions on its access.
According to reports, journalists from the three organisations were still present at the White House after Trump’s announcement, and details about how the proposed restrictions would be implemented remained unclear.
White House Correspondents’ Association Condemns Move
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) criticised Trump’s decision, arguing that the issue extends beyond individual media organisations to the public’s access to independent information about the government.
WHCA president Jacqui Heinrich said the US Constitution protects press freedom from government interference and that such protection does not depend on whether a president agrees with a news organisation’s coverage.
The association also expressed support for journalists working for CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
First Amendment Questions Raised
The announcement has prompted questions about the legal limits of presidential control over White House press access.
Legal reporting has pointed to a 1977 federal appeals court ruling in Sherrill v. Knight, which held that once the White House establishes press facilities for credentialed journalists, access cannot simply be denied based on the content of their reporting.
