IIT Bombay Student Dies by Suicide
Mumbai, September 19, 2026: A second-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died by suicide on Friday, September 18, triggering protests on the Powai campus.
According to IIT Bombay, the student had been found using a mobile phone during an examination and had uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT to seek answers. The institute said no disciplinary action had been initiated against him and that he was counselled by the instructor and Head of Department.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death are being investigated by the authorities. Police have also deployed personnel on campus as students gathered to protest.
Students Demand Accountability and Transparency
Following the student’s death, a large group of students gathered on the IIT Bombay campus and raised concerns about the administration’s handling of the incident.
Students demanded greater transparency, accountability and answers from the institute administration. They also raised wider concerns regarding student welfare and the handling of academic and disciplinary matters.
Police said the administration was holding discussions with the protesting students in an effort to reach an amicable resolution. Some students later dispersed, while others continued their demonstration.
IIT Bombay Says No Disciplinary Action Was Taken
IIT Bombay issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the student’s death.
The institute said the examination incident had been discussed with the student by the concerned instructor and department head. According to the institute, he was counselled and assured that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career.
IIT Bombay said the student subsequently returned to his hostel room, where he was later found dead. The institute added that the circumstances surrounding the death were being examined by the appropriate authorities.
Students Raise Concerns Over Repeated Incidents
The latest incident has also prompted students to raise concerns about other reported student deaths at IIT Bombay.
NDTV reported that this was the third reported suicide at the Powai campus within seven months. Students have questioned whether sufficient measures are being taken to understand and address the circumstances behind such incidents.
The current protest is therefore not limited to the examination incident, with students also calling for broader discussions on student welfare, institutional accountability and transparency.
Police Investigation Underway
Mumbai Police said an investigation into the student’s death is underway.
DCP Dattatray Nalawade said students had gathered following the incident and that the administration was engaging with them over their concerns. Police presence was maintained on campus as discussions continued.
The student’s death and the subsequent protest have brought renewed attention to student welfare and academic pressures at one of India’s premier educational institutions.
