Former international footballer and Punjab Police officer takes additional charge of Sports Secretary at PAP Headquarters, Jalandhar
Jalandhar, September 23, 2026: Gurmeet Kaur, a Punjab Police officer and former international footballer who represented India, has taken additional charge as Sports Secretary, Punjab Police, at the Central Sports Office at PAP Headquarters in Jalandhar.
Gurmeet Kaur assumed the charge on September 3, 2026, becoming the first woman police officer to hold the post of Sports Secretary of Punjab Police. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the sports administration of the state police force.
From Football to Police Service
Gurmeet Kaur hails from Buttarhi village in Ludhiana district. She began playing football during her school years at Lyallpur Khalsa School before continuing her studies at HMV College in Jalandhar.
She went on to compete in the National School Games and national inter-university competitions. She also represented Punjab in national-level tournaments and captained the state team on several occasions.
Her football career later took her to the international stage. According to the Babushahi report, she represented India in international competitions, including Asian-level events, and travelled to Germany in 1997 for a football tournament.
Joined Punjab Police Through Sports Quota
After her sporting career, Gurmeet Kaur joined the Punjab Police as an Inspector through the sports quota in 2001.
Over the years, she served in several policing and administrative positions, including responsibilities as an SHO, Narcotics Cell officer, DSP and ACP Crime in Ludhiana. She was also reported to be the first woman SHO in Ludhiana city during 2002–03 while posted at Division No. 2 Police Station.
In 2024, she served as ADCP Headquarters in the Ludhiana Police Commissionerate.
Commandant of 27th Battalion PAP
In August 2026, Gurmeet Kaur was posted as Commandant of the 27th Battalion, Punjab Armed Police (PAP), Jalandhar, after serving as SP PBI, Kapurthala.
Her additional responsibility as Sports Secretary now brings together her experience in competitive sport and police administration.
New Role in Punjab Police Sports
As Sports Secretary, Gurmeet Kaur will be involved in the administration of Punjab Police sports, including matters related to sportspersons, training, coaching, sporting infrastructure and competitive opportunities.
Her background as a former international footballer gives her direct experience of competitive sport, while her years in the police service have provided administrative and organisational experience.
The appointment also places a woman officer with a professional sporting background in a key position within Punjab Police’s sports administration.
