Captain Smit Machchhar Airlifted to UAE From Saudi Arabia for Advanced Treatment After Mid-Air Attack

Date:

Medical Evacuation Following Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia

Captain Smit Machchhar, the heroic flydubai pilot who survived a terrifying mid-air cockpit attack by his co-pilot, has been officially airlifted from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for advanced medical care. The Indian-origin captain had been receiving treatment at a specialized military hospital in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia, where he underwent emergency surgery following a forced landing. Authorities confirmed that his condition is stable as he transfers to a medical facility in the UAE to undergo specialized rehabilitation and care for severe injuries sustained during the high-altitude ordeal.

Heroic Actions Avert Major Aviation Catastrophe

The life-threatening incident occurred aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 174 passengers and crew from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the flight, the co-pilot launched a violent attack inside the cockpit, causing the aircraft to experience a rapid loss of altitude and send out emergency distress signals. Despite suffering critical stab wounds, Captain Machchhar demonstrated exceptional courage by reaching the cockpit door release mechanism. This critical move allowed fellow crew members and passengers to enter the flight deck, overpower the assailant, and regain control of the plane before safely landing in Tabuk.

Global Praise and Ongoing Tri-Nation Investigation

Captain Machchhar’s decisive and heroic actions have drawn immense widespread international acclaim. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Mumbai-born aviator as a hero who saved dozens of lives, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended his bravery for preventing what could have been a catastrophic tragedy in the skies. Machchhar, a veteran pilot with nearly 9,750 hours of Boeing 737 flight experience, joined flydubai in 2022 after spending over ten years with SpiceJet. Meanwhile, joint investigations involving authorities from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel remain underway to fully establish the motives behind the cockpit assault.
